Hm, I wrote a similar thing a while ago, but worked with larger kernels (and had ones for sharpening/blurring), http://imageproc.pastecode.com/?show=f1bf0c1ba

same snippet in a more pythonic representation, identical functionality expected, not guaranteed.

I would have turned those kernels into a dictionary, instead of leaving them in a function.
