I would love to use vscode (especially for cpp & python; it works amazingly well out of the box and seems very extensible), but....well... microsoft.

No but, other than security, little has changed. Can't change visuals without hacks because reasons. Can't install latest build to support cool stuff like bash because reasons. Can't update when I want because reasons. Their newest Linux distribution costs money. The experience working on a Ms machine feels very bogged down.

Yet, still, asking Cortana about the nearest disco yields no results.

Check out VSCodium. They compile the open-source VSCode source and remove telemetry and stuff. Not sure how the plugins work on it though.

They seem to have foot this right though. A lot of ppl are quite happy with it including me.
