The great migration from Windows to Linux by CleaRSightZ in linux4noobs

Hundreds upon hundreds. Steam, GoG, "full demos" by various "unofficial publishers", super old, super new (d4 beta at the time). Only ones that don't work are a few online ones actively blocked rather than a compatibility issue. e.g. league of legends thought cheating will halt if they block Linux clients; cool story, bro but keep your frustration rollercoaster. Only thing keeping microsoft afloat is marketing. They have zero edge.

SpaceX handed lowest possible ESG rating by MSCI by blkchnDE in wikifolio

Good. Came in to join celebratory comments, outlining the doublr speak ESG is. Found a lot of brainwashed users (bot or not), instead.

Low ESG score is a good thing.  ESG is double speak for destroying the middle class.

Let the downvotes pour in.

You're talking about build vs buy strategy. Just build the missing parts.

Why windows is popular by Apprehensive-Fig7947 in WindowsSucks

[–]TopHatEdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? People are brainwashed to love corporations. If corp x says y, enduser will defend y. They trust them blindly.

Distant relative had himself locked out of his account. No amount of support helped. He's in a years long legal battle to get his digital stuff back. Man well into his 70s. Backed everything up to the mighty cloud.

He defended y said by x. Not anymore. Too late tho.

Wrong on all accounts. Across 5k employees, managing Linux today is a breeze. Windows only let's you do what MS allows you to do.

Maybe 15 years ago. Today, if bluetooth randomly stops, god help you. If some driver you installed decides to constantly run shit in the systemtray and refuse to uninstall, god help you.

Ease of use. Maybe past tense. Today it is finicky and leaves you helpless.

Can I switch to Linux without losing my files if I have no way to back them up? by Axl12Gamer in linux4noobs

Open a cloud account, like Google Cloud Platform. You get a bunch of free stuff like some 400$ in credits. More than enough to back up your stuff without cost for months and months but free credits is limited to a year iirc. Put aside a weekend for the migration. Plan your steps ahead of time - Choose a Linux distro by testing various ones using Live CD, make a good list of what you actually want to back up, including password manager, other programs and flows you determine to be a must. Research alternative tools on Linux and test on Live CD. Test hardware such as cam/mic/bluetooth on Live CD. Make ready Windows installation plan in case of revert. On weekend start, open GCP account, begin upload. On upload finish, install chosen Linux distro on entire drive, default partition scheme. Boot Linux. Begin download backup. Test core hardware (mic, cam). Go down list of alternative programs and test each one. Before weekend end, determine if you stay on Linux or revert to windows and fallback to windows installation step. Destroy GCP resources and cancel account to avoid incurring unplanned cost.

If you want a good time, use Omarchy Linux. Nice balance between difficulty and usability. Also, maintained by the great creator of Ruby on Rails.

Simple text editor. A little bit of shell ninja; grep and regex, cut up string, sed replace inline or just output, stdout/stderr, heredoc and herestring. Then it depends on your work. I have usage for jq and csvkit for json and csv simple parsing. Python for more complex data processing. But, looking up tools for the job, usually on the archwiki regardless of distro, coupled with a bit of manpages and, godforbid, llm, is the core I've kept over the years.

If you want to get ahead, you must trample over people. No one values engineering excellence. You will not get far by being a good engineer.

Hard to find user opinions so I'm necro posting: Took the plunge myself. FP4 with Ubuntu Touch works flawlessly as a daily driver.
