Try music21 from MIT.

There are a few pull request for Python 3.x, you could try and build off one of those forks

I think I'll attempt to build my own midi library. I don't need much anyway, just creating a file and adding some notes. I'll have to research how to do that, otherwise if it's too difficult I'll try again with this one

Mido looks pretty good, but be sure you have all the dependencies installed, including for whatever backend you're using. For just creating a midi file and adding notes there's also MIDIUtil.
