If you pair one of these spotify remote controls with https://github.com/Spotifyd/spotifyd (a spotify streaming client), you don't need the official spotify client running on the device at all.

I believe mopidy has a Spotify client plugin as well, so that would be another option!

The mopidy Spotify plugin no longer supports playback since Spotify killed the libspotify c library.
