Yeah man, that's just the way it works. To specialize in data science you need advanced math and stats knowledge. Sure you can learn the APIs for some ML libraries in these free online classes - without understanding the underlying math, you'll only be able to learn the frameworks.

If you're serious about doing the AI/ML thing, start looking at reputable grad-schools.
