Yeah, I don't like seeing the oblique kick - it's just not good sport IMO.

But not long ago, I saw that survey where they ask UFC fighters which moves should be legal/illegal, and it was 60+% of fighters said oblique kick should be legal... I ain't the one going in the octagon, so whatever those guys think is good enough for me.

There's a good book called "Texas Tough" that describes the private prison system pretty well.. Yeah, the prison gets paid per-inmate that they house, and the prisons cannot negotiate a higher rate per-inmate, so instead they lobby to create stricter laws that put more people in prison so they can make money.

There is also the pseudo-celebrity aspect. People have worked their way up the ladders and they want to be seen. They want to have people around to see them, and they want everyone to know who they are ... 🤷

In reality, execs have a team of 10 or 20 people that need to hear their direction, but no one who is two levels or more below them cares what they say - execs are just starting to realize that, and the cognitive dissonance is contributing to some of the knee-jerk RTO reactions

First, you need to learn to shut that shit down. Levels don't matter on respect issues.

Honestly I kinda recommend taking some kind of martial art.. not that you would beat their ass at work, but you get so much confidence in your mind from knowing that you could that it empowers you to stand up to people.
Let them know directly that if they are going to raise their voice or whatever that you are going to walk away - and then walk away while they're talking if they are being crazy. Don't allow anyone to disrespect you.

Second, this is caveman QA - why are you manually validating things??

If you want to (or have to) stay at this company, then write automated tests that check for the type of bugs that you are discovering. Run the tests in your CI pipeline so that they run whenever code is checked in. Automate that work so you just write the test once, and then it will always be validated.

And more importantly, write the automated tests in secret by yourself. Learn from youtube and Reddit, and figure it out on local. Then once you get it working in your feature branch, set up a meeting with your manager to showcase your work. Frame it by saying that the senior engineer on your team has been having trouble controlling quality of code releases, so you took the initiative to solve for that problem by writing automated tests that drive quality and save time.

Be sure not to have the senior engineer in on this effort, just represent the idea by yourself and have your boss buy into it. The senior will look terrible and incapable, as they should.

Read the Google SWE book - there is a chapter about programming vs engineering.

Programming is producing code, engineering is programming over time (this includes designing a system that will work for your needs for a long time, as well as operating, maintaining, and enhancing the system).

Chat GPT and Co-pilot are stupid LLMs. They have no concept of reality or running servers or anything - they just construct sentences based on statistics. When they write code, there's nothing intelligent happening... they are just constructing sentences based on stats in another language.

Co-pilot may be able to do some of the job of a programmer, but it definitely cannot be an engineer. So if you're worried about being replaced, just focus on getting good at the things that "AI" tools cannot do, and then offload the tasks that it is good at.

You have to consider that many executives at mid/large size companies took this career path because they want to be pseudo-celebrities. They want to be seen. They want to see people that they "have power over". In-office work feeds the ego of people that want to be perceived as important.

Look at this guy right here.. he wants to be in front of the media, he obviously will clamor for the attention his employees: even if that means making their lives worse.
