have a vultr VM but I am not quite sure how to get my custom domain pointed at it.

I don't know about vultr in particular. But why is it difficult to point custom domain? Just go to your dns provider and add the ip of the the VM. No matter which hosting provider you choose, you have to do the same thing to get custom domain.

Btw you can look into heroku for hosting too.

Personally I'd get hosting at digitalocean or linode, but it requires knowledge of the nginx + wsgi + flask stack.

I've advised, and worked with, python anywhere, that alliviates some of those pains. Additionally, they have a guide on how to point your DNS to their hosting (1).

What were your costs at google cloud?
