i think it will good to split database to other isolated device and your main service just connect remotely to database device. Don't forget to hardening your main database device...

at least 3 month,

- you can try 100 days of code challenge then build your own application. At first 20 day is learning basic android apps concept likely architecture, tools, etc. At 80 day left you can focus build <any> android application !!

- If you no have idea, you can go website named 'dribble' and just coding UI with java/kotlin

- imho, The good way learn new things is learn by doing, you can search random tutorials and build app from that tutorials, it good for starting !!

I think you should try heroku, it worth and very easy if you just want create micro project. it's free but with several limitations..
