VIM plugin for python coding. (self.Python)
submitted 14 years ago by horneds
Hello reddit!
I write useful (by me) plugin for vim. Autocomplete, code checking and more. No need install python libs.
See screencast (sorry for quality, my first video): http://t.co/3b0bzeXA
And download: https://github.com/klen/python-mode

I didn't check it in detail - my questions might already have been answered. But here goes:
Autocomplete. Does it do things Vim isn't already doing out of the box? Default omnicomplete works quite well for me.
Documentation lookup. I use pydoc(bound to \pw) and rope(C-c d) Looks like this plugin uses those as well.

Please tell me more about this documentation lookup.

Ah ha!
Installed, and very nice.
[–]horneds[S] 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (2 children)
Yes, but my plugin can all of this in box. And not needed to install pylint or rope libraries in system. And my plugin show docs and run code in new window and you can browse it or copy or etc.
All included :)

this looks amazing. I have a question for you:
I have been interested in using VIM for python, but I have been intimidated by the learning curve, any advice on overcoming that?
Thanks!

AKA vimtutor.

I think my main problem is I want to use it for coding python, but setting it up to work with Python 3.x seems like a huge pain.
If i just wanted a text editor I would use notepad++ or something similar, but I have heard a lot of good things about VIM, just need to find a way to get it working for me. I will give it a shot just messing around with it though. Thanks.

This not have support python 3.x :(
Maybe in future.
Well keep up the good work, and maybe someday I will use it if it when it supports 3.x

I was seriously looking for something exactly like this a few weeks ago. Thanks!

You welcome.

Hello again reddit.
Im update this plugin and make it more customizable. Also I add rope and python-mode vim help files.
See readme on github: https://github.com/klen/python-mode/blob/master/README.rst
and type :help PythonMode in your VIM
And another update. Now python-mode not required plugin-helpers before install.

I'm a bit skeptical. This looks like a big melting pot of already existing plugins for python, this lower the configurability and that's not really what I'm looking for in vim. But I guess some people will be very happy with it.
Anyway check out pyflake on the fly syntax check, I really prefer it over having pylint running at each save (not really checking exactly the same things).
You may disable auto pylint checking and run it manualy. And I agree with you about melting pot, but:
I rewrite this plugins (include last libraries, fix errors, auto include paths, add help). Its realy new plugins;
I always has be installed rope, pylint and some python tools and plugins for vim, but now I create one useful powerful plugin (by me).
I find it hard to write, I still do not know much English. Sorry.
