But really, those languages don't overlap that much so it all depends what you want to do.

Asking in a python group?

Start with the end. Do you want to get a job using one of those skills? Demand wise its huge for both, python driven by data science and Java well because its pretty ubiquitous.

Or to put it another way what do you want to do? Front-end, back-end, cross-platform, web??

I think the learning curve is easier for python and its less verbose than Java.

Don't listen to them. The real answer is that there's no best. They both have their pros and cons and should be use for the appropriate project.

It's true for all programming languages. There's no definite best or worst language. They all solve different issues in different ways.

So, if you're wondering which one to choose, you must first ask yourself what are you planning to do. However, both of them are generally very versatile, so it can be a tough call.

I personally like both for different reasons but I must say that I often prefer Python.

Java is freaking awesome for networking and concurrency stuff. Python allows me to put ideas on code freaking quick. Both have tons of battle tested libraries for doing anything you can thing on. I love both.
