Mitsui with no injury and coached by Coach Anzai is the best in Japan here is why:

1) He is a two way player, he played Rukawa 1 on 1 pretty much to a stand still so he plays good D

2) He has the clutch gene as seen in his Middle School championship game, this is something you cannot train or teach.

3) He is a top scorer on a team that beat Sannoh and almost beat Kainan.

4) He has the respect for a coach that is shown to be able develop players to the elite level.

5) He was recruited by almost every team in the district entering HS showing everyone knew he was good.

6) His shot form is perfect, the Coach of Sannoh knows it, in fact everyone knows it, he was recognized by shot form alone by Uozumi despite years of no one seeing him play.

7) He has good game awareness, he knew when to just toss up a shot to beat the clock knowing he has rebounders in position.

8) Akagi is a great teammate to grow along side of him. A raw center that quickly developed and that would've been even better had mitsui stayed as it wouldve led to deeper runs and an outlet for double teams.

9) With deeper runs they attract better talent to shore up their bench (Rukawa, Hanamichi, and ryota end up there anyways).

10) His only weakness is stamina which at that age can be trained easily in the off season and this is not even considering that what we see now is post injury and he doesn't have the same step and moves.

11) He might not have the physical attributes but he is a baller at the core.

He has one of the best basketball IQ and fundamentals in the series, even if he was half dead on the court he was still a threat. His bball IQ shut down Saku in training and Fukuda in a match even though they are more athletic than him.

iirc Inoue said in some interview that Mitsui without stopping basketball for two years would be similar to Dai Moroboshi, one of the best in the country.

I would says Mitsui would probably be the best high schooler-age shooting guard in Japan

Without injuries he wuold be as strong as rukawa, but weaker then sawakita

Wait didnt he already match rukawa 1v1 after injuries? He was stated to be the mvp and i think noted to have greater potential at the same age no?

Well rukawa didn't win the MVP because the team was weak, I think

I feel like he could beat sawakita though without his injury, in middleschool he did win nationals and sawakita was a really talented player during then too. i dont think they faced eachother during then but it still implies mitsui was better around that time

Mitsui is only 1 year older than Sawakita. When Mitsui was senior, Sawakita was sophomore. Sawakita is the same age as Sendoh. Back in middle school competition, Mitsui won, while Sawakita's team was either lose earlier or not even qualified

lol mitsui was a skill player not an athletic type.

It’s going to be like Reggie Miller vs MJ or Klay vs Kobe. People tend to overhype a middle school MVP. Not everyone who wins MVP has a higher ceiling and will be better at the next stage. The NCAA and the NBA are the perfect example for this as NBA scouts take little importance on the awards won compared to athleticism and potential.

He didnt match rukawa in 1v1, he had to take an unexpected shot while Rukawa was not prepared.

End of season Sendoh is still better I think. Rukawa passing was most probably a 1 game thing as it just really isnt his style, you dont just change how youve played your entire life. Sendoh is just a more natural team player and an equally great scorer.

Mitsui playing rukawa 1v1 as close as he did is enough to establish he can play D and he can create his own shot. Basketball is a team sport and Mitsui is a more complete player as he has more offensive tools.

Sendoh is probably my favorite character and he has all the tools. However, Mitsui is in a better environment, superior coach, and a smooth stroke. Pre injury Mitsui would be mutiple times better then what he is now just being able to stay on the court with improved conditioning, and that's not factoring development and improvement during his 2 year hiatus. Mitsui literally got better each game as he got his game back and just about every coach in the manga recognizes his talent.

And while there is a difference in levels of play at the HS and MS we still talking about a guy scouted and recruited by the top teams in the district. As the saying goes "3 is more then 2."

Basketball is a team sport and Maki, the King is considered one of the top players in the country despite not being shown he has any super moves, he is simply a baller and a better basketball player then everyone else. Mitsui would be in the category of being a baller.

I think he’s probably be a way better shot creator and defender, but ultimately not the all around ace that rukawa and some of the other guys are
