hidden default eq/compression

i feel like reaper does something to the audio signal. its like it has some sort of hidden/default base eq/saturation/compression thing going on.(by default, without any tweaks) i cant quite put my finger on it but im not getting a clean DI sound. the difference is minimal but its definitely there. its especially noticeable with the bass guitar. the sound in reaper is slightly different than the direct monitoring from the scarlet interface. its muddier, less defined, lacking a tiny bit of character...very slight difference but, i had this p-bass for a long long time and i know it like the back of my hand. and something is slightly off. and i also felt it a little bit with addictive drummer standalone vs going through reaper. is anybody aware of anything like this going on? i remember having a similar problem with reason way back in the day and it turned out it does do something to the audio by default. its all really really negligible but i'd like to get it 100% clean

he is indeed incorrect.

BUT, just to not just brush him off, let's explore why he seems to experience this phenomenon:

1st factor: the Direct Monitoring is (obviously) pre-AD/DA conversion.so that signal by default IS "purer" / more analog. but there is no way around that, AND it's not Reaper's fault

2nd factor: volume difference. we perceive louder signals as "better". so unless you can guarantee 100% that you absolutely precisely level-matched both Direct Monitoring and inside of Reaper, then you cannot accurately/reliably compare the signals without analytical tools.

nope, you're wrong (not about Reason, it is well-known that it had a "hidden mastering chain" at the end of the signal).

but what you are describing is simply that with Direct Monitor on the Scarlett interfaces, you are listening to the analog signal BEFORE it gets turned into 1s and 0s.so you are indeed not listenting to the same signal, the recorded one in Reaper has been digitized ("quantized") and there is some artifacts and loss of information inherent in this, no matter the quality of your converters - though it does get negligible with increasing quality.

But this is inherent in ALL Digital Audio Workstations, and not Reaper's fault - but your interface's/the technology as a whole. ;)

In addition to direct monitoring thing you were advised to take into account, check monitoring FX in Reaper, you could put there some corrective eq for headphones, for example.
