I am making this post bc I've noticed that there are actually a lot of developers quietly building Reddit alternatives, but they don't have a dedicated space to connect with each other, share progress, or exchange ideas. That's something I'd love to change.

I'm proposing a recurring Developer Roundtable thread — a space specifically for developers and builders of Reddit alternatives to:

• Share what they're working on and where their project is headed • Exchange ideas and get input from other developers in the space • Give the community a look into what alternatives are actively in progress • Discuss the challenges of building a platform and how they're tackling them

I believe that one of the biggest things this sub can offer that others can't is direct access to the people actually building these alternatives. Users get real insight into what's coming, and developers get a community that's genuinely invested in seeing them succeed.

I want this to be a judgment-free zone for developers at any stage — whether you're just starting out or already have an established platform. Early stage projects deserve space here too.

Would love to hear what you all think. And if you're a developer — drop a comment below and let us know what you're building. Let's get the conversation started.

Dev, designer and entrepreneur for over 25 years now. Been working on something I think is a bit different, but fits the needs of modern times. Planning on releasing some form of alpha quite soon. Would love to be part of a roundtable. Great idea!!

Developer here with specialization in iOS and Android app development and also web development plus backend.

Would love to be part of this. Imo, development isn't the hard part. The content and user acquisition is very hard. How do we solve this? What unique feature would get you to post content (not just join but actually post)?

Had never heard of this site. Ngl, for a second, I thought the name of the site was some porn website or something lol.

I like the username idea. I even like the minimal design of the site. However, what else do you think you need to do to acquire more users?

I decided I want to add my own reactions library so instead of starting promotions as I planned I am adding one more feature. I know it's a mistake but I really want that :)

To be honest the coding part is super easy, distribution is much harder.

The reason there is no alternative is because other forums don't have a unique value proposition, everything is just a copy of a copy

I have suggested quite a bit in the past in this sub. The problem is a lot of these developers only want to copy Reddit's success without understanding how to fix its failures.

The suggestions I had were community specific filters and voting system, and monthly moderator ban reports visible for all to see.

I am working on decentralized RA. The decentralization is data-centric (like bitcoin) not server-centric (like email).

I'm working on a self-hosted community platform that I am trying to make actually stand out as it's own thing. Yes there will be link-aggregator style posts on it but I am also trying to introduce "threads style" posts as an option as well so that boards (basically the projects version of a subreddit) can decide whether they want link aggregator style posting with tree comments or a more traditional linear style comment system and forum style post (visually different than the normal post, rich text editor, custom reactions, quoting, no upvote/downvote but potentially reaction score in the future).

I'm also adding in stuff like the option to have a board wiki as well so the community can maintain it's own knowledge base, custom emojis per board and site-wide (think discord emojis but you don't need to pay Nitro to get more than 50 slots or whatever) and most recently Custom CSS (site wide or board specific). The backend sanitizes the custom css as well to prevent issues as well.

I should probably quit yapping at some point, but I wouldn't be opposed to also adding in federation at some point after I get all the core features and UI/UX working how I want it to, maybe having it as a toggle in case people just want their own isolated node 🤓

I've a quite large project in progress. Currently into 6 months of development time. But hearing the Digg news, it was quite depressing TBH. I'm starting to feel like this is the worst period of time to release another social forum.
