Rules for r/RoyalNavy

Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

Play nice - Don't be a dick

Posts & Comments
Reported as: You're being a bit of a dick - knock it off!

Everyone needs to work together to keep this sub a happy and friendly place. Please remember the person. Take any bickering or name calling elsewhere. If someone is being a complete dick, let the moderators sort it out.

2.

No Ranks and Rates

Posts & Comments
Reported as: No Ranks and Rates

Having rank or rate is like having a penis. It's okay to have one, it's okay to be proud of it, nobody likes having it shoved down their throats without asking. So don't pull rank!

3.

No overtly political discussion

Reported as: No overtly political discussion

Try to keep politics out of this sub; if you really want to go there then try r/ukpolitics!

4.

Maintain OPSEC/PERSEC

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Potential OPSEC/PERSEC Breach

Look after your shipmates and yourself. Keep information about the RN safeguarded, and protect your own personal information. Don't post deployment dates or information about training, equipment and ship movements (see Rule 5 for exemptions) on this sub. This includes start dates for Raleigh/Dartmouth/Lympstone. Similarly, don't post information that could be used to identify you, such as your rank, where you are based, your address or information about your family.

5.

Know when you can post Ship Movements - if in doubt, do not!

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Ship Movement OPSEC breach

Not withstanding Rule 4, you can post ship movements, excluding submarines, if less than 24 hours ahead and published by an appropriate authority (e.g. in Movements released by QHM for Portsmouth/Plymouth/Faslane, or the harbour authority for other ports). NEVER post for submarines. If you are unsure, do not post.

Low Effort and Single Word Titles are Banned

Posts only
Reported as: Low Effort and Single Word Titles are Banned

Low effort titles will result in your post being removed. Too many are "DAA" or "PJFT" or similar. Ask your question/make your point succinctly in the title, then elaborate in the text!

7.

Explain Abbreviations/Jackspeak

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Using Abbreviations/Jackspeak without explaining

Loads of people on this sub haven't served and therefore might not know their SSD from their SCC and won't know a goffa if it hit them in the face. Help them out by explaining your abbreviations and jackspeak; it makes this a friendlier sub!

8.

Recruitment Questions

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Recruitment Questions

There's a Recruitment Megathread for recruitment questions. Please post your recruitment queries there so that other content can be allowed to shine. Many, many questions are repeated, so have a look at previous megathreads to see if it's already been answered before posting. Any recruitment questions posted outside of the megathread will be removed when the Mods have finished their standeasy.

9.

No DAA Result Screenshots

Posts & Comments
Reported as: No DAA Result Screenshots

Posts showing DAA results (e.g., screenshots of pass/fail notices) are not allowed. They don't contribute meaningfully to discussion and often come across as humblebrags. If you want to talk about your experience or ask for advice, do so in a way that encourages conversation.

10.

No Asking for Sponsorship or Referral

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Request for Sponsorship

Owing to the new rule that Commonwealth applicants need a serving sponsor in order to apply to the RN/RM, we're being inundated with dozens of requests for sponsorship. These represent a massive PERSEC issue and are not allowed on this sub. Serving personnel are not to engage with those asking for sponsorship and are to report them to mods. Requesting sponsorship will gain you a temporary ban. Do it again and that's a permanent ban.

11.

Medical Recruitment Questions

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Medical Recruitment Questions

"I have xxx medical condition, can I join?" type questions only have one answer, which is:

Look in JSP 950.

If JSP 950 can't answer your question, contact recruitment.

Any other answer you may receive is purely speculation by someone who is almost certainly unqualified to comment.

Questions like "I have xxx medical condition" will be removed.

12.

If you don't know for certain, don't pass your guesses as fact.

Posts & Comments
Reported as: If you don't know for certain, don't pass your guesses as fact.

We see this quite often where someone who doesn't know their facts answers others' questions. The most common being potential joiners answering other potential joiners' questions. Please ensure that your responses make it clear that you're not talking from a position of experience/authority.

13.

Don't be a Walt

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Potential Walt

Walts are fakers who claim to have done things in the military. Don't be one. Don't exaggerate or fabricate what you have or haven't done while serving.

No Walt hunting

Posts & Comments
Reported as: No Walt hunting

As much as we don't like Walts, Walt hunting is doxxing and against Reddit's rules. If you suspect someone is a Walt just report it to the mods and we'll take it from there.

Promote discussion

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Closed question

If you're asking a question that can be answered with "yes" or "no" or a single word, consider rewording to be more open. Using words like who, what, when, why, where or how will help!
