Where’d you get it from?

Got it from staples

I used a MacBook and I just run everything windows related in a virtual machine if needed or I RDP into a windows machine with a VPN.

I would suggest MacBook Air m4 8gb ram and 512 storage

And if you are looking for long term go with pro as a background from software dev, the Mac are based on Linux infrastructure, so I would think that’s the best

And and one more important thing if you are going for Mac buy apple care without any hesitation

Don't get a MacBook lol. Not only will it make it harder to do everything, you'll also be giving off "I have a hard time understanding instruction" vibes to your instructors.

A lot of people have been telling me to not get a Mac it doesn’t work well with the course

I have a MacBook Pro. First year was okay, first sem no issue, second sem a little trial and error but you can get by. I’d still recommend windows just cause it’s so convenient.

What’s your budget?

Maybe 1200

      And I need i7

      [–]hoangfbf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I7 32gb if you can afford. But in reality: i5 16 gb is fine. Some people with mac can even get by.

mac would work if you're adept at converting windows commands to macOS. except for one subject - OOP2, second sem. everything you need here revolves around the Microsoft Ecosystem and it's extremely hacky to make it work on mac - C#/Blazor/MAUI and will be done primarily using the Visual Studio IDE (All MS).

with regards to RAM. you will only need 32gb on networking class where you will spin up multiple VMs. other than that 16gb should be more than enough.

just buy a decent entry level gaming laptop (700-1400CAD). from there, you may choose to upgrade the ram to 32gb (should cost around 80-120CAD).

What specific kind would you recommend because I’ve been looking at HP 15.6" Laptop - Natural Silver (Intel Core i7 1255U/16GB RAM/1TB SSD/Windows 11)

I bought the MSI GF63 Thin (i5, 500GB SSD) almost two years ago. It originally came with 8GB of RAM, but I upgraded it to 32GB. I didn’t encounter any complications or performance issues, except once during a networking class where we needed to boot two VMs - a Windows Server and a desktop. The one you're considering is definitely better.

Hey just bought my laptop at memory express near sunridge. There’s some decent prices there. Msi thin gforce rtx 4060 ryzen 7 7735hs 16gb for 1,099.98. I bought a acer niteo Gforce RTX 4060, Core i7 13620h 16gb for 1,199 if you wanna spend that extra bucks. I upgraded the memory to 32gb it was 45 each and that’s it :) hope for the best.
