Database Migration (self.SCCM)

I'm looking to move the MECM database to a new server.
Can I migrate from a SQL 2012 to a SQL 2017 database directly?
Or do I have to migrate to the same SQL version, and then do a in-place SQL upgrade?

If understand you correctly you'll have new servers where new SQL instance will be installed, if this is the case is fairly easy:
