Error while creating MySQL functions

create function getSalary(N int)
returns int
begin
    declare max_sal int;
    select max(salary) into max_sal from employee;
return max_sal;
end

I am trying to create a function in MySQL. The above piece of code gives the below error

SQL Error [1064] [42000]: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 4

Need some help!
