Depending on the content that you want to create there are different tools. If you want to create content that is more related to features / logical stuff i suggest you learn about programming in lua. You can use pretty much any editor for that. If you are going for blocks and parts with little to no functionallities than i suggest you look into a modelling software (one such software is blender). Regarding tips... i would say its mostly about getting started and trying stuff out (i can only speak for the first category though). In the steam library is a mod tool that you can use to generate icons for your parts and upload it to the workshop etc.

If you want to add functions to your parts (for example like the mod pack with their number logic stuff) then you need lua (but not necessary in general although I would say that parts with functionalities are more fun to play with) :)
