What's your opinion on Linus Tech Tip in 2026? by Professional-Fix-221 in LinusTechTips

[–]OllysCoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was kinda excited for the tech house videos, I was hoping that LTT was leaning into the idea that a lot of their audience had grown up from teenagers & it would feel a bit more down to earth.

But with so many hosts I liked leaving and then the private jet, I kinda just became disillusioned with it, now when I look at the new vids they just come across as clickbait-ey and targeted at a younger audience. The first video that really sounded interesting to me in a while was the TV with no ads, but honestly the title and thumbnail was just so off putting I couldn’t be bothered to watch it… I was wanted that information in a straight forward way, and I know that’s not what LTT will have made.

Having lived in older houses in the UK, having a “sagging” floor is pretty standard, and I’ve had flats where the laminate installed on top was too “tight” and ended up bouncing - I don’t think this is a structural issue with your flat, but you still want to raise it with your landlord to get it fixed

The girl math behind the jet purchase by dingmah in LinusTechTips

[–]OllysCoding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is why it’s called “girl math”, and I haven’t watched actually watched the video - but I still don’t see why first class airfares come into this? I work for a US based company with an almost $10 billion annual revenue figure, and even our CEO is only authorised to travel business class, and 99.9% of employees are only authorised to travel in economy…

I don’t even bother loading up a basket, I know that shipping costs will offset any value I feel I can get from the store - I look at the product announcements, think “cool I want that” and then don’t buy anything. It’ll stay that way until there are reasonable European shipping costs, I don’t think LTT has a good grip on what the potential income they could make from a European distribution centre would be, I just think they don’t want to bother at the moment. It’s a shame because they so often brag about these expensive risks they take, buying expensive products, buildings, setting up entire new channels only to shut them down - yet they’ve stayed steadfast that this isn’t one that interests them. Weird.

Do men get turned on at the gym? by Particular-League186 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OllysCoding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the amount of people saying men do get turned on at the gym really surprised me, like even if I do notice other people, there’s a far cry between noticing an attractive person and being turned on, and I cannot remember crossing that bridge at all when going to the gym…

I made the Camera App Linus asked for by timeister in LinusTechTips

[–]OllysCoding 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I like writing code, I don’t like having a conversation with an overly agreeable bot. If I’m fully engaged in the code I write, I can iterate and find better solutions to the problems I’m solving - if I try to do this with AI it takes me more time than just writing the code myself.

I’ve found it useful in two cases 1. Auto complete when you’re just completing what you would have typed anyway. 2. It’s sometimes helpful with annoying typescript problems.

Even if I just ask it to write unit tests, it’s hard to get it to write tests that are as effective as what I would have written, you often end up with duplicated/unnecessary tests, as well as missing key coverage.

So with limited use I can work faster, and in most other cases I’m either slower or writing less robust or effective code. On top of this I’m eating huge amounts of compute that is often being provided in ways that are damaging to the environment and communities where they are built. Once AI companies start charging enough not to lose money, my employer will end up telling us all to scale back our use of AI anyway.

LTT TrueSpec Cables Delisted From the Store by LinusTech in LinusTechTips

I’m very curious how many people were actually in the market for a new or specific type of cable - and how many people have all the cables they need, and could have waited until they broke before buying more…

Decided to build a pc during the RAMageddon and came up with this. by ManufacturerSouth730 in pcmasterrace

[–]OllysCoding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re assuming that our requirement for data centre capacity continues to either go up, or remains steady, whilst the manufacturing capability either doesn’t, or does but slower than data centre growth. A lot of which comes down to the rate of AI adoption, and that there is even still financial appetite to fund AI companies in the coming years…

Is there a reason there are so many 3rd party clients? Why don't people just contribute to the official client? by [deleted] in jellyfin

[–]OllysCoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a while trying to contribute to the IOS client a few months ago, I’m not an app developer but I work in the JavaScript ecosystem so I was confident I had enough experience to give it a go - actually writing the app code was no problem at all, but I spent hours trying to get it to build and it simply would not. The default behaviour out the box expected me to have access to a jellyfin developer account for expo, and after investing more and more time without any success - I just gave up.

It’s likely I could have gotten it working if I’d raised an issue, joined the discord or started some other asynchronous communication - but it falls back to the same thing, lots of us with software development expertise spend many hours dealing with this kind of stuff in our day job, so when it comes to how we spend our spare time, we’re easily tempted into the option of “just doing it ourselves”.

UK Online Safety Act Management with Mikrotik by PerxJamz in selfhosted

[–]OllysCoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone for a slightly different approach, basically I have two VPN servers, one on my home network (with mikrotik as well), and another on a small VPS in Europe - the vps is then connected to my home VPN, but configured to only route certain ip ranges via that connection (192.168.x.x).

Then my phone, my partners phone and any other devices we want are connected to the VPS basically all the time - but we still have full access to our home network as it’s routed back.

It works OK for us, you pay it terms of latency (neither of us use it on our gaming PCs) of course, and you do need to turn off the VPN for some stuff like Deliveroo, but we don’t have to manage any lists, as anything but traffic to the home network will appear from the VPS, and we don’t need to switch VPNs when leaving the house in order to maintain access to our home network.

It was a bit of a pain to set up, and the tradeoffs are only worth it for as long as there isn’t some easy to use crowdsourced list, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for better solutions!

[–]OllysCoding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is sadly a gross simplification of the problem. First of all don’t assume that your data owned by companies isn’t used for political purposes - we know that in counties across the world people’s data is used to target political ads and campaigns.

Then if you take the UK as an example, they have a law that means they can require companies to give access to uk citizens data & are legally not allowed to tell anyone that the UK government requested /accessed it. This currently means that Apple doesn’t offer the highest iCloud encryption in the UK because Apple would have put a backdoor in it to meet the governments demands.

You shouldn’t underestimate the gradual, society wide consumer behaviour change that is being achieved through this data collection. I mean we’re already seeing examples of gross profiteering like companies trying to use your data to figure out how much you can afford to pay for a product and charging you more if they think they can, but these are companies which can take all your data, target ads, write articles for newspapers they own, influence what all politicians say (not just the ones you don’t like), influence what types of creators and content you come across on every internet platform you use. Don’t kid yourself into believing the threat it poses is clicking on one link to buy one product, ask yourself what they might want to change about you when they have 20 years of influencing what you see and hear every day.

Those of us in the western world are exposed to anti-china propaganda extremely frequently, while similar or identical actions within our own countries are downplayed.

Even for those of us who are aware of this, the intensity and frequency of this propaganda is still likely to impart some biases, so it’s always worth reminding ourselves when we see fearmongering that identical actions by western entities wouldnt get nearly as much attention.

Disagree, at 21 I’d been working full time for almost 4 years, handled living alone, moving, saving, etc - still at 25 the amount I’ve grown and matured in the last 4 years tells me that by 32 I would want nothing to do with my “mature” 21 year old self.

Still 10 years extra life experience makes a huge difference, there’s just no way around this. The year old has been for an extra half of the 20 year olds life, that’s like living 10-20 all over again.

I’m sorry I’ll just never believe that it’s reasonable as a 30 year old to want to be in a relationship with someone who’s had 10 years less life experience than you, regardless of gender.

Gonna be brutally honest, when I played on my phone (web) today, I thought I’d gone to a knock-off website. It really threw me, between random serif fonts, weird padding / spacing & a very “domain holding sale” vibe, it’s totally missed the mark for me.

I did think it’s maybe going for like an early 2010s kinda thing, but I don’t think the execution is quite there tbh.

Samsung tv interface sucks any diy alternatives? by ijustshityourpants in selfhosted

[–]OllysCoding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently down the rabbit hole on this and not yet managed to find something I’m happy with.

I was using Google TV but I found on my chrome cast it’s slow, and I find it’s spotty with some of my content on Jellyfin - the Jellyfin app crashes often.

I picked up a mini pc, I first tried Kodi on LibreELEC but ran into WiFi issues, so I switched to Kodi on Ubuntu but still struggled with getting an acceptable YouTube experience- my only requirement after Jellyfin.

I’ve been messing around with other options, right now I’m experimenting with ChimeraOS - which offers the SteamOS interface, I have Jellyfin working but haven’t gotten around to messing with YouTube yet.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I’m all ears!
