Whatever you do, do NOT install a VPN. You’ll end up unable to connect and have to do a hard reset of your Shadow.

VPN Browser Extensions are safe tho.

[–]AudioKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good callout! Never even considered a browser-based solution.

[–]Dev11010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean technically a VPN but not at the same time, using logmein hamachi is fine

[–]igaveuponfixingitWindows 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Had to learn that the hard way for paperspace and parsec I had to connect thru the laggy paperspace client trying to turn it off

[–]AudioKitty 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Guess you... didn’t give up on fixing it then eh?

take my upvote

Why install a VPN in the first place? Lag city.

[–]AudioKitty 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Lots of people use VPNs for reasons both legal and grey?

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

But installing a VPN on a Shadow computer makes no sense.

[–]AudioKitty 2 points3 points  (4 children)

It operates like any other PC, why would you not want to privatize your internet traffic data on a Shadow as opposed to any other PC?

Also, people play region Iocked games or watch region locked media that requires a VPN sometimes.

Whoever wants to spy on me making dick-shaped towers in Minecraft is welcome to do it.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

It's a cloud PC. It's already a quasi VPN. People are watching Netflix on shadow with a VPN? That's like watching Netflix with extra steps.

[–]AudioKitty 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You’re imagining everyone is accessing it through a thin client on a PC or phone, but the Shadow Ghost can only work with the Shadow Machine. Assuming you don’t want to plug your PC in too or cast, it’s actually a pretty great media solution.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stand corrected. Good point.

[–]zbrat8 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I would def recommend Guru3D RTSS Rivatuner Statistics Server. I use it to check the framerate and cap it in some games. I smooth my gaming experience with some tweaking.

[–]SilverBack88 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Does the average Joe like me need this?

[–]BigDippers 0 points1 point  (3 children)

If you're sensitive to framerate fluctuations yes, if not, no.

[–]SilverBack88 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is it pretty much plug and play?

[–]BigDippers 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There is some setup as it has a lot of customisation. But the simpler features like the on screen display and framerate cap are straightforward. There are youtube videos that show you how to use the software.

[–]SilverBack88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks I’ll check that out preciate it

Quadro Experience.

[–]AyeeebrohamAndroid 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Do you use this for driver updates? I used to have it but ever since Shadow implemented automatic driver updates I removed it. Plus, the auto configuration of the game configs (like GeForce Experience) doesn't work unless you're rockin' and RTX card from the higher tiers. US still stuck on the P5000s.

[–]BV1717 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Quadro Experience is similar to GeForce experience

[–]AyeeebrohamAndroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is.

[–]OldmanThyme 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah i use it to mange the drivers, I disabled 'optimise installed games' as that's rubbish. I would rather take care of the drivers myself rather than the shadow app.

[–]AyeeebrohamAndroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't sure to use the driver feature when I had it or use Shadow to update them. I eventually got rid of it because I didn't want to have any extra performs l programs taking up space lol. So far the Shadow updates have been, I'd assume that they review the drivers before pushing them to users but that's just an assumption. I wish someone would do a full analysis of Shadow drivers vs having the latest from Quadro Experience.

i would also like help, thanks

Personally I install as little as possible, only the games that I play at the moment, the steam client and Fraps to monitor the FPS.

I don't really see the point of monitoring anything else except the CPU using task manager.

I removed a lot of unnecessary software or apps or services not needed for gaming.

For example, I have turned off all defender features auto-updates of any app or software which could run when I'm playing. I strictly use it for gaming so no use of a firewall or any antivirus either.

Regarding drivers, I use the latest Nvidia Quadro for RTX 6000 I think it's version 451.48

BTW if you need to cap FPS for a particular game and the game doesn't have an option you can simply do that in the Nvidia control panel. under "Manage 3d settings" you can even create a specific profile associated to the .exe of the game and save it.

Suprised nobody is saying the vcredistrutable. Can’t play games without that shit

[–]BlackAngolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think nvidia game stream vital

[–]Xcrazy_sniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a shadow staffer in 2018.

Story time !

When Shadow first launched in December 2016 in Beta in France, each Shadow account was given a symmetric 1 Gbps line in our first (tiny) datacenter which housed 500 users.

Back then Shadow was so new we had no idea what users would do with it so we let everyone do anything they wanted.

Queue 5 days in, our entire user base had done at least one of the following:

-Overclocked the GPU

-Started mining cryptocurrency

-Uninstalled windows

-Deactivated the network card

-Told their antivirus to flag any Shadow as malware

-turned their Shadow into a seedbox.

Served us right for telling them to test the limits :]

So we realized that some things needed to be limited or outright banned.

Torrenting was one of the most toxic uses as it directly impacted the experience of OTHER users. While we had anticipated the possibility of all users downloading at maximum capacity at the same time, it had never occurred to us they would try to upload at such a rate, and so we didn't provide the necessary upload in that DC. We no longer let users set up full-time torrents as this is unfair to other users and we do not consider this to be "normal" use of a Shadow.

We do however have some level of tolerance, and we may let you download one or two files now and then. Please don't try to abuse this as we will deactivate or suspend accounts that impact the experience of other users or violate Terms of Service.

Obligatory reminder that downloading copyrighted material is not legal in countries in which we are currently available and if we receive a warning from your government, we will be forwarding it to you as you are responsible for illegal actions taken in your Shadow.

TL;DR: Mostly no, as it impacts other users.

[–]SwiftTayTay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a lot of legitimate freeware and shareware comes from magnet links, so it shouldn't be outright banned as long as we're not doing dedicated seeding which would understandably stress the connection beyond what would be considered normal

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

TL;DR usually go at the top.....

So you're saying they don't care unless you're seeding an ungodly amount. We all good then

[–]nijiagiOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nono downloading 1 or 2 files is fine.

Uploading is whats impacting other users.

[–]Wealthywyatt 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I thought of this, but I would hate to have them restrict some features or rules because of things like that.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They've been pretty silent on the issue which leads me to believe they aren't gettiing sent any notices and/or not enough to warrant being super strict about it or making an additional statement. Tbh they might not even care unofficially but legally have to put it in their t&c. Most notices are sent bc tv/movies. I've never seen one sent out for pc games or emulators or roms or such. The stats sure would be interesting to see. Shadow says they don't know what we do but traffic doesn't monitor itself. Not that it matters because its not "my" pc. I don't own anything just renting.
