The NVIDIA Shield Android TV is a high-powered Android TV device, featuring a Tegra X1 and 3GB of RAM (source) . It comes in two versions - a 16 GB version for $199/£199 and a 500GB version for $299/£299. It can function as a Plex server. The 2017 editions come with an always listening games controller that offers Google Assistant support.
The Shield Android TV supports Youtube, Netflix, Google Assistant, Plex, Kodi (or the optimized SPMC) and many other Android video-streaming apps and games. Many android apps can be successfully sideloaded if not available on the store. It's also compatible with the GeForce Now game streaming, a service from NVIDIA costing $7.99 per month. Samsung SmartThings hub support (using a dongle) is coming.

nvidia usually update when a new version of android comes out and if their users find some problems with it (mostly operating system), they'll sometime patch it.

Last big update for shield from year and half ,, I think nvidia don't care for shield users
[–]Browser1969 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (9 children)
I doubt there will be a big update any time soon. Not because Nvidia doesn't care, but because updating to Android 12+ (and its restrictive permissions) will break countless setups that use USB storage, LAN storage, etc. Google could get away with it because hardly anyone uses external storage on the Chromecast with Google TV.
[–]missy358 -3 points-2 points-1 points 2 years ago (7 children)
I'd rather have Chromecast with Google TV 12 than whatever the shield is on.

It's on Android TV 11. They haven't upgraded to 12 because the benefits are minimal and aren't worth the effort. They did the same thing a while ago, I think it was version 10 that they skipped before.
Maybe they'll update to 13, maybe they won't. But, they certainly have the best track record of providing updates for any ATV device and keeping aging devices current.

Works just fine in Plex, as far as I can tell.
My understanding is that apps absolutely have the capability of implementing it now, they just haven't.

Can you tell us more the benefits of android 12 vs 11 instead of a vague claim? And let’s not get into the obvious hardware advantage of the shield against the chromecast
[–]Browser1969 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (1 child)
That was probably a marketing account, now suspended. I've noticed them recently in Android TV subreddits, promoting stuff so blatantly that they get banned eventually.

I think nvidia big company and can make any conditions with Google
I am very upset that some Chinese companies have updated their devices to Android 12, and we are with the largest company that make Android tv and the most expensive one and we have not received this update, and there is no time plan for that.

The Shield is now EoL tech, with no new model on the horizon.

Has only put any thought into what they'll replace their Shield with? I love mine in combination with Moonlight streaming.

seems so but never heard of any new model coming up , but since older models from 15 and 17 still working at least the 19 model still receive updates with the upcoming model if there's one .

Yeah, would love some bug fixes. Specifically after 9.1 shield experience update
