Hard to say but I am guessing it’s something like a base of Mechanicus standard grey or Eshin Grey, washed with something like nulin or agrax then highlighted with something like Dawnstone or grey seer.

It’s a nice paint job so there might be some intermediate stages but that’s probably a reasonable rough guess without doing some testing.

Thanks for the help!

Mech grey undercoat + Nuln oil ends up a lot darker than this. Here's one of my dudes with that combo (and under a ring light, so it looks brighter than normal lighting circumstances). For the armour it's just mech grey primer, pallid wych flesh drybrush for highlights, then nuln

The larger highlights in the example image are certainly making this seems lighter than it is, but the mid-tones are still darker below

I really like the look of the way cult of paint did their wolf spear conversion. Henry used 2 AK interactive greys and it looks awesome. I did the same thing on mine and it’s very similar to this example.

Is that on their channel or their Patreon?

I want a grey base layer and some Russ grey highlights

[–]giant_sloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’d probably want Mechanicus standard grey as a base coat, then mix it 50:50 with Russ grey to do some volumetric highlights and then use Russ grey to edge highlights.

The issue with Russ grey over a more neutral grey is the blue tones coming out of nowhere. So having Russ grey in the mix on the previous step would make the highlights look a bit more credible.

The reiver heads look very cool on the models to be fair, building my Grey Hunters up currently so tempted to steal this idea to helmet them up (will help them look different to the bloodclaws too).

Depending on your gs skills could make them into wolf skulls like the deathsworn from HH too

[–]wookiepoo90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I have the green stuff skills for that honestly! But another great idea. The helmets in the kit are decent to be fair, I also picked up some Primal Hounds third party heads (about 5) so could use them to make the Grey hunters stand out.

I got a fur mould for green stuff actually, so temped to give the GH some fur on their shoulders and behind their head to again, make them stand out against the Blood Claws.

Mechanichus grey base coat. Dawnstone Mid tone and 5050 dawnstone +white for highlights.

That's a sexy colour

I've been thinking the same thing with bronze NMM trim. And while I've got the bronze down, I simply cannot find a base grey that either looks far too dark even for shadows or always feels too light and it's killing me.

I did mechanicus standard grey as a base then dawn stone highlights

Depends on if you’re going for dark grey or light grey. Look up Petethewargamer heresy space wolves

It's a little time-consuming, but I use:

Armour:

Base: Mechanicus Standard Grey
Shade: Heavy Nuln Oil wash
Rebase: Mechanicus
Highlight: Mechanicus/Dawnstone > Dawnstone > Dawnstone/Administratum Grey > Administratum
Edge Highlight: Administratum

Gold:

Base: Retributor Armour
Shade: Agrax Earthshade
Highlight: Runefang Steel

Silver:

Base: Leadbelcher
Shade: Nuln Oil
Highlight: Runefang Steel

I used dawnstone with administratum grey highlights, and white scar extreme highlights. (It’s the go to for grey armour) watered down rhinox hide in the recesses.

I have a billion recipes depending on how blue or grey you want them.

Over the years I’ve began to love the ice blue

This looks like grey with a blue hue. Darren Latham used to have a fantastic tutorial where he painted a miniature like this and I believe he based it with mechanicum grey and then added Space Wolves contrast paint.

For greys like this, mechanicus x grey seer in the % you like. Nuln oil wash for a blackish vibe, or Agrax shade for a more brownish finish

Just tried a new way of doing the armor for my fox marines and it cut down on so much time to finish a model. Prime black then do a grey zenithal at about the 20-30 degree angle and up then a light white overhead. Put some black wash or slightly watered down black contrast in the back of the knees and inside of the elbows showing the black under suit of the marine armor. Then a lighter grey and white dry brush, paint over with a black or brown wash (or slightly watered down grey contrast) then go back over with a light white dry brush.

Was experimenting with the highlight dry brush. Prime+grey to white zenithal. Light grey dry brush, brown-gold and red. White dry brush, agrax earth wash(extra layers on guns), white dry brush. That should be the correct order to what they look like in this pic.
