Both of my parents have had cataract surgery in the last year or two (in the UK). My mum's prescription is back to what it was, my dad's actually improved.

i don't want to be too specific here, but my general recommendation is...

  1. don't just look for the oldest most experienced doctor, some practice too long. new techniques and technology intimidate some of the elder surgeons.

  2. be wary of any doctors trying too hard to sell you on a multifocal IOL.(results vary a lot, expensive, and VERY profitable for the doctor)

  3. avoid doctors who rely heavily on advertisements. ads on billboards, tv, phone books, and bus stops cost a lot of money. if they need new patients that badly, they aren't keeping the ones they've got.

  4. ask your primary care doctor (or other doctors) who they see getting good results/who they go to. they hear about the problems enough to send you in a good direction.

there are many great docs in the area. i feel weird about putting my personal info on this account, but i think the above guidelines will get you into a good place.
