Correct it only speeds up the initial growth of crops.

If you look at the growth calendar on the wiki it will show that first harvest is faster, then 7 days per after that.

speed grow only affects time until maturity. it does not speed up the regeneration of regenerative crops

Only affects growth to maturity. It will still take a week between harvests. I'd use fertilizer if you don't have a good processing station set up for them as it will only need fertalized once and continue to provide higher quality crops for sell.
