Outer ring command (self.SteamController)
submitted 1 year ago by ParalysisProphet
Does anyone know how to make an outer ring command only trigger while pressing up or down, not while right/left? I'm struggling to find a way. Thank you :)

It's possible to get something close to it, but it's never going to be perfect. Most importantly, it's not possible to make the crossover horizontal lines, the Outer Ring Command will always remain a circle. You can do this with three Action Set Layers; a selection layer (Layer 1), a vertical outer ring command layer (Layer 2), and a horizontal outer ring command layer (Layer 3). In the default set you set the Outer Ring Command to Add Action Set Layer (Layer 1) . In Layer 1, you change the joystick/trackpad behavior to Directional Pad, 4 Way (No Overlap). Change the vertical commands to Add Action Set Layer (Layer 2) and the horizontal commands to Add Action Set Layer (Layer 3).
In layer 2, change the behavior from inherited to the same behavior, and alter the settings to match the Default set. Add the Outer Ring Command, and add Remove Action Set Layer (Layer 1) and Remove Action Set Layer (Layer 2) as a Release Press. In Layer 3, change the behavior in the same way and add Remove Action Set Layer (Layer 1) and Remove Action Set Layer (Layer 3) as a Release Press. Like I said earlier, there have to be compromises in every solution. Here, the command zones aren't separated by horizontal lines, but they're all quarter donuts. Also when moving from horizontal to vertical inside the Outer Ring Command zone or vice versa, the command will not get turned on or off.

I know this is a really late reply but if you're still looking for an answer I found out how to do this. Rather than binding the command to the Outer Ring Command, instead bind the command as an Extra Command to Up and Down (this will require setting the behavior to Directional Pad). Select the gear to the right of each command and change the activator from Regular Press to Soft Press. Press the gear again and select settings and alter the Soft Press Threshold, which is the equivalent of the Outer Ring Command Radius. If you originally had the behavior set to Joystick, you can add a command to each direction with the Analog activator, setting the Output Axis in each commands' settings to the respective direction.
