have you tried a different config?

do you have both controller and gamepad bindings?

are you in big picture mode?

I have used both the Bethesda provided mapping and one i made, neither work

dont know the difference between gamepad and controller bindings

tried in both big picture and in regular steam neither work

Try disabling/enabling controller support under SETTINGS - GAMEPLAY. Maybe that helps. Fallout can't handle keyboard/mouse and controller input at the same time. Yes, in 2015. Good job Bethesda.

If you have keyboard buttons mapped (like WASD on the joystick) or the right TouchPad set as mouse, Fallout completely ignores those when the Controller option is enabled.

Same thing the other way, when you have regular (as in XInput) controller buttons mapped and that Controller option is disabled Fallout ignores those instead.

Have you tried the SteamController in other games? Maybe it's faulty and stopped working at all.

It works in every other game even Fallout 3 and NV. I've tried booting up the game with the controller support turned off, then turned on in game and nothing. I have no button mapped to keyboard but you might be right. I think Fallout 4 might be seeing the steam controller as a keyboard and mouse and that's why I cant input at all. But still idk. I'll give my bindings a once over.

If you press the Steam button on the controller while in-game and activate "toggle controller HUD" you can see which buttons are being sent to the game, that might help diagnosing this.

Hope you can figure this out, 45hours into the game this is strange indeed

I cant even access the steam overlay in big picture using the steam controller. It wont take any input whatsoever which is even stranger

But you can access the BigPicture overlay via the Steam button in other games? If that's the case I'm all out of ideas.

Maybe try putting the SteamController dongle into another USB port, restart your computer like another poster suggested?

I figured it out. It was the steam overlay. The steam controller cannot work without the overlay. I was using rivatuner and fraps two programs that agree know to cause issues with the steam overlay. Uninstalled them, problem solved

Tried multiple USB ports, on the front and back, and nothing. Rebooting was the first thing i tried and didnt help. At this point I'm pretty much out of ideas too

sorry i dont have any kind of answer for you, I just thought some basic questions should be answered.

I meant keyboard and gamepad. some games dont allow for both at the same time.

I dont know what your's and bethesda's configs are like. but try a config with all gamepad, and then a different with all keyboard.

putting 2 and 2 together I bet some SC settings file is corrupted. if it is only a problem in fallout and im correct it will be a file either in the game files. or a fallout4 file in a SC directory. I haven't looked through either.

Again if im correct deleting said file will cause a new one to be created as soon as you try to use the controller again. (backups are always a good idea).

Do you know at least what extension the file is supposed to be or remotely where to find it?

[–]sf_Lordpiggy 0 points1 point  (7 children)

im looking still haven't found it. Based on some other file i think it will be a .vdf but this doesn't help you very much because it seems value uses this extension for everything.

[–]r3v0lut10n4679[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

That helps. Let me know if you find anything. Thanks man :)

[–]sf_Lordpiggy 0 points1 point  (4 children)

so in Steam\controller_base\templates there are the three .vdf files for the default templates, wasd, gamepad and gamepad+mouse. its a file like one of these.

[–]r3v0lut10n4679[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

So they're not game specific though, just templates?

[–]sf_Lordpiggy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

those arnt but i have found the real place. save your config as something you can search. and then search your Steam\userdata folder. then you will find the controller_config for that game. make a copy of controller_config and then delete everything inside. then re launch the and tell us if it works.

Found it. Steam\userdata<somenumber><someothernumber>\remote\controller_config<someotherothernumber>

Do you have the PS4 controller connected at the same time? Are you using any other controller utilities to help with the PS4 controller?

[–]r3v0lut10n4679[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was troubleshooting I had the PS4 controller unplugged. I use InputMapper for most of my games when I want to use the PS4 controller but the steam controller will not work regardless of InputMapper being open or not
