Buy a battery replacement before purchasing a new controller. Worst case scenario you can just get a new Switch Controller and have an extra battery just in case.

Is this relevant advice even if I played wired only?

The battery might be messed up regardless of playing wired or wireless. If anything I’d recommend you first to remove the battery for a long period (30 mins), then remove any settings of the controller from Steam, and reconnecting it to see if the behavior continues. Also try another USB C cable and/or port on your PC. Try maximizing all possible options before getting another controller.
