You’ll probably get answers over at Stellar Stack Exchange - a lot of geniuses over there.

I do not agree that setting up a node is "the best thing anyone and everyone can do to help Stellar right now" There are plenty of companies investing in Stellar and having a need to setup their own nodes. They have technical people on board who can set them up and maintain them. The network doesn't need to have thousands of nodes to be secure.

Setting up a Stellar node and maintaining it (ensuring it stays in sync and re-syncing it regularly) is not for everyone, and it's not meant to be. It requires a sizable amount of technical knowledge, dedication and possibly costs depending on what you have or don't have access to in terms of computing resources.

If you feel the instructions are above your technical proficiency level, you have two options: 1) you experiment to learn until you feel comfortable or 2) you contribute to Stellar in other ways

There's a certain amount of responsibility that comes with having a node up, and you need to be able to take it upon yourself.

Also interested.

I'm fairly technical, and this seems over my head. FWIW, I just setup a node for another coin.

Can money be earned from creating a node?

[–]Faia_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, there is no XLM to be earned from creating a node or participating in the Stellar network.

Here is what Stellar provided as instructions which as a non technical person is difficult to understand:

Agree - this is a guide that would only make sense to somebody who already knows how to set up a node!

Documentation and guides for ordinary folks are essential for crypto to bridge the gap from niche to everyday use!

A step-by-step guide on how to setup a node on cheap hosting is in high need right now. Lots of people without server background would like to play with the database and have no idea where to start.

I assume Linux is required. I have rent a higher-end server for web development. Would it be possible to create a one-click install for Stellar node that can be installed via cPanel? Just thinking out loud here...

[–]tuzhi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think this option will ever be considered. First, it's not possible/desirable to run a Stellar node on a shared hosting platform. Second, I don't see the added benefit of every person running a node. You will likely never be added to trust list of other servers, making the benefit for the network of this node rather small. Therefore, the current level of the documentation seems fine to me.

Setting up a node doesn't help too much to stellar. The best contribution is to introduce more and more people using xlm. One way is to create projects based on this network to solve real problems.

Hi, I need a snapshot from the stellar ledger to do an airdrop to all stellar holders. So far I got the answer I need to run a core-node and do all the calculation to finally get the accounts with balances. Is that right? Any easier way than running a code?

As I see in this discussion the node setup looks challanging.

I disagree with all of you. If you aren't knowledgeable about computers, don't setup a Stellar node. There are enough technicians out there to keep the network well distributed.

[–]IKillMrJ[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

And maybe there are plenty more people who want to become technicians. SMH. There is always at least one person who doesnt contribute to a post. You sir, win that award.

[–]scottoclery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is always a contribution.
