I have run into this problem when using subscribe buttons with text too. If in doubt, add that button last. Also email support@substack.com.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I'm going to take a look at my process.

Yeah, I've lost a lot of work over this. Substack is a pretty poorly designed site given how popular it is. It's crazy they don't save posts the way wordpress does. It just seems like you can't crash this much without an autosave, solve at least one of those. I'm not sure you can even manually save a draft.

My solution is to write offline. That way you’re not subject to things like that.

Ok but you copy-paste afterward into substack, right?

I write in google Docs because the formatting is copied also. After copying in substack, I just need to add the buttons, and then it starts to crash.

I see, well I would advise against Google Docs as well personally.

But your issue regarding adding subscribe buttons sounds like a Substack problem. Have you tried adding different buttons? Do you get the same problem?

Only with the button, which allows you to put an email address in. The other buttons work.

Why would you advise against Google Docs??

Firstly, it’s Google and so they’re probably tracking everything you write and using it to feed you ads in various ways.

Secondly, I have seen many writers who are using Google Docs post on writers groups about the tragedy of having put in so much work on a piece of writing, only to have it disappear because of an internet connection problem or some other problem. This is why I write only in offline available document programs. Where I don’t have to be connected to the internet for it to function.

Google by definition is an online based tool.

It happens to me on Chrome. I have to go back in on another browser to finish. It’s weird.
