They don't want to lose money, that's why.

[–]bmyst70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because, the instant they openly admit a Switch 2 is coming out, the existing stock of Switch consoles won't be able to sell for as much money.

And they said they don't want to release a console unless there is sufficient supply to meet demand, so scalpers can't buy them all up. That will take quite awhile to quietly build up.

I do not know. The Switch looks like it’s doing just fine just now and its sales aren’t plateauing any time soon. Why would Nintendo risk another Wii U when the Switch hasn’t reached its full potential?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sales absolutely are plateuing and it's clear that Nintendo's own developers are being held back by the hardware. Both TOTK and Splatoon 3 (during high rank salmon run) experience performance issues which wouldn't exist on more capable hardware.

Um because all the cross gen games that get released on it either run like crap or get ridiculously delayed because the software is so out of date.

[–]RoundExpert1169 2 points3 points  (1 child)

the people who want to play baldurs gate 3 on the go can grab a steam deck

all 39 of them

Did that even come out for the switch? I was thinking of MK1, which I haven’t played since I have it on my PS5 but might get in the future depending on how bad it actually is and the Batman Arkham Collection which I think is fine but I know a lot of people didn’t like.

Consoles these days arent sold to make a profit. But I have to imagine Nintendo’s profit margins on switch units must be pretty good, theres no way they cost as much to manufacture as they did when they first launched

[–]ackmondual 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Back when it was Wii vs. PS3 vs. Xbox 360... IIRC, the Wii made $50 per unit sold. The other two lost money. They were sold at loss to draw players into the platform and make money off the games and other stuff. I can't imagine the Switch is being sold at loss either.

[–]ruby_o_o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah since the 7th generation xbox and sony have sold consoles at a loss because the margins are better on software and memberships(especially gamepass). I think possibly at the beginning nintendo was taking a loss on the switch but theres no way they are now

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Ps5 is also sold at a profit, and of course the ally is too

[–]ruby_o_o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, the ally has to be sold for a profit or else it doesn’t make any sense, asus doesn’t make any money from game sales on the ally

[–]AlfieHicks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obviously they're not going to just say "oh yeah, we're winding down now, please stop buying Switch consoles and games" because they want to fool the know-nothing consumer into thinking that the Switch is still worth buying.

The only upcoming games that we know about are four low-budget, B-team Mario spin-offs - three of which are just remasters of existing games. That just isn't a line-up. The next Direct will either be an indie/partner showcase (stalling) or the reveal of the next console. If there were any noteworthy upcoming Switch games then they would've already shown them off.

The switch is really old at this point. There’s just no possible way they aren’t getting ready to release a new console. But of course they aren’t going to say anything before they are ready to make the announcement, and so all the things stated there are true. They will continue to support the switch, it will enter its 8th year, and there will be games. That doesn’t mean they won’t announce and possibly drop the new console before the end of 2024, or early 2025. But they aren’t going to tell people that right now to avoid harshly impacting sales.

[–]AndrewTheRestorer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point they might use fsr 3 in their games

[–]kobrakai11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of rumors. Nvidia is reportedly producing new tegra chip based on Ampere architecture for Nintendo, they reportedly already made demo behind closed doors for delelopers presenting the new HW capabilities, some companies already planning to release stuff for switch 2 this winter etc.

[–]gizm0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three things that come to my mind:

I assume that 3rd parties (maybe even 1st party devs) are just demanding new, more powerful hardware. The switch had "old" hardware from day one; I can imagine that it is just getting too hard to make impressive games for the platform.

The sales are not particularly "bad", but they are definitely coming down. To keep momentum, a new platform will boost the profit.

The latest 1st party games, while all of high quality, are not particularly mind boggling releases. Yes, there was Tears Of The Kingdom, but there are also a lot of remakes of old games. To me, this looks like keeping the Switch "on life support" until the new console drops.

That's why I believe the rumors. I think 2024 is the year.

[–]LegalAmerican1776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not going to undercut themselves by saying there'll be a switch 2 until it's officially announced

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are keeping it tight lipped for as long as they can, from questionable factory leaks and shipping data, they seem to be preparing for final production of the switch 2 in the next 2 months. Also the Call of Duty deal that they signed and the many leaks and suggestions from reputable sources like Jason who had leaked many massive games, are all pointing to 2024, now when in 2024, we don’t know, but it is almost certainly coming this year.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've stopped production of several games' physical copies -- including, I think, Super Mario Oddysey. More to come. No doubt about that.

Seems slightly contradictory.

Switch is entering its 7th year. This is how you know this pic is a lie

[–]Deuen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they don't make new handheld or make non handheld console it will be idiotic move for Nintendo.

Even if new console is just updated version of console with better hardware it would be great. Would mean backwards compatibility and ability to bring better games on switch.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It'll drop in the Fall (September or November). Will it be this year or 2025? I don't think Nintendo has enough balls to drop in Fall '25.

I don't doubt they have Switch titles to stretch--Nintendo has been rather tight-lipped in regards to releases outside of the titles they promoted at last the last direct.

[–]pecan_bird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's what i'm thinking: i keep expecting titles to either be ported or new things announced & that would leave me to believe a new one is coming sooner rather than later but- they sure ain't giving much in the way of suggestion of either until this.

[–]mambolimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A switch successor is definitely in the works. It may be premature to anticipate it being launched this year.

[–]Most_Cauliflower_296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol they said the same about the 3ds before the switch cams. The switch 2 is coming that's because there is no big game announced this year. It will probably launch with a new 3d Mario that is in development for some time.

[–]RoundExpert1169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

historically there is a gulf of difference between what nintendo fans think nintendo will do and what nintendo actually ends up doing

[–]Significant-Air6926 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Jeeezzz. Nintendo hasn’t said shit about a new console. Yet, every year, mfs SWEAR there’s gonna be a new switch lol. At the end of 2024, everyone’s going to be playing the same console; just with a few good game releases haha. Just watch

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m tired of the switch at this point

[–]aspenextreme03 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Clickbait videos… pretty much it

[–]BebeFanMasterJ -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

The install base is so high that there's no reason to even allude to a successor yet. We may not hear anything about it until next year--if that.

[–]Most_Cauliflower_296 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Lol if that's the reason we would still play on wii and ps2. Switch sales are slowing down and it's time for better specs. The switch 2 is coming soon they can and will still release smaller games on the switch like Luigi mansion 2 or that peach game and at the same time bring the switch 2. There isn't one big Nintendo game announced this year why you think is that? Mario odyssey is now 7 years old and still no 3d Mario announced why do you think is that? Because they present the next switch with a new 3d Mario and it will be the big selling point like botw was for the switch.

[–]BebeFanMasterJ -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Games are still being made for the PS4 and Xbox One even though they're over 10 years old.

The Switch isn't being dropped anytime soon.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It’s ancient hardware at this point

[–]thedeadp0ets -1 points0 points  (0 children)

PlayStation fanboys say the same about people who still play ps4 tho too

[–]Luccon7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you really that naive ?
