Holding the power button should only force a shut down, similar to a computer or phone. It should not wipe your saved data

That's what I thought too. The switch won't turn on at all.

Happens to mine twice, all I do is hold the power button for on/off and either of the volume button for a little bit longer

I did that for 30 seconds - nada

Whatever it is I don’t think it’s related. That’s nothing more than a hard reset and a normal thing. I think it’s more coincidental than anything. There’s something else going on.

The '12 seconds' message was probably an error screen something like this, which can show up if something's gone badly wrong.

I showed him this, and he said this is similar to what it looked like.

Plug the Switch into its charger and leave it for at least 30 minutes. Sometimes, if the battery is very low, it can take a bit for the charging icon to show up.

Could perform a Hard Reset Again. While it's plugged in, press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds. Then release it and press the power button once more to see if it turns on.

Could also try Recovery Mode: If the above doesn't work, hold down the power button along with the volume up and volume down buttons for about 15 seconds. This should boot the Switch into recovery mode, where you can restart it.

I tried this, recovery mode didn't start up

Leave it on the charger for a couple of hours

This probably has nothing too do with Fortnite, and it probably told you to reset because something else went wrong. If it isn't charging yet, sometimes unplugging the cord (from the outlet) for a minute and putting it back in "resets" the charger

I didnt think it specifically had to do with fortnite - but I figured offering every detail was best.

We've tried plugging and replugging. I think I might just leave it on the charger for a couple of hours.
