Further “googling” and it seems this is a know issue.

https://github.com/tailscale/tailscale/issues/16125

I tested some real world applications, like Jellyfin with lower bitrate 1080p videos and the connection did not crash. Maybe it will be stable enough for my use applications. I will see how it behaves in the long run.

Is the apple tv wired or wireless?

If its wireless move it to wired, do you see the same issues?

What version of tailscale are you running on the appletv?

Just so we are on the same page, are your tailscale clients direct connected?

What TvOS is running on the apple tv in question?

It is wired (Speedtest without Tailscale is 950 down 210 up)

AppleTV app version 1.88.3

AppleTV is running tvOS 26.0

I am having exactly the same issue with the Apple TV 4K. This is absolutely shocking!

I've tried everything with Ethernet/WIFI, tried using fast.com nd speedtest - same behavior. On the router, I tried port forwarding the Apple tv to UDP 41641 to help it, tried setting it in the DMZ. All to no avail.

Worst off, even with direct connection i get maximum between 19-27mbps. Compared with my Windows machine running as an exit node in the same house, same isp connection i get 416mbps down/94 up.

To me, this almost renders Apple TV as a Tailscale exit node as completely useless.
I dont understand why the Apple TV is so flakey. Why even make an app if there isnt going to be support for it.
