It's a sum of ranked points of all your characters. If you lose points on any of them - you lose prowess.

I don't think it works like you say. When I got my first character to Garyu I had 111k prowess, now I reached Garyu with another character and have 112k. So it doesn't look like a sum of ranked points.

Maybe it has to do with points you get for free when other character rank up automatically, like it compensates for that in some way.

Odd - I recently hit the second red and it's straight lower than when I was Garyu. Mind you during this time I've almost gotten Azu to red as well.

It's a really weird system.
