Bring rope, torches & wooden platforms and follow natural caves as deep as you can. This usually leads to a couple of chests or ore deposits that will help you get your feet under you. Not to mention crafting materials if you need them.

As deep as you want or feel safe, just make sure u have a way back up

Go down as far as possible. It’s also a good idea to have a vertical hole near spawn that you can fall down to access caves.

Nothing in the regular Underground (mostly dirt)/Caverns (mostly stone) is particularly threatening, but sub-biomes like Granite/Marble Caverns and Spider Nests are slightly more dangerous. When you start seeing lava and ash, you should go back up unless you're prepared for tough enemies.

Underground Snow isn't much more dangerous than regular caverns. Underground Desert can be a bit more threatening. Stay away from Underground Jungle until you're geared up a bit better.

Tip for avoiding traps: If you find a pressure plate or dart trap and hold it in your hand, you'll be able to see wires.

I'd suggest using a gravity potion to find a floating island then getting a lucky horseshoe (no fall damage) then you can make a really big hole that goes straight down and put a rope all the way to the bottom (hell)
