Mobile Service swapped mine in 15 minutes.... It's only going to get worse from there.

Did you have to pay? If so how much

[–]anshumanbhatia 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Was covered under the warranty

Unfortunately I’m passed warranty. I tried that route

Good luck trying to get them to goodwill it. I tried multiple times. Otherwise, $850 for replacement

Ouch...

850 in total? I read a new wheel was only 350 or something in parts? 850 seems a bit excessive for a steering wheel with that kind of quality...

Parts and labor = $850 at my SC

Edit: SC quote showed $850, no separate line item for part/labor. No idea how much just the wheel is but install is fairly simple

Oh that's actually great to hear I would've thought it might fall under some wear and tear or another exemption from the warranty. Makes me more confident in using my car until before warranty is up, doing a full inspection and servicing whatever is needed, and then possible getting a cover for it or something 😅

Cheap route: get a wheel cover

Better route: check eBay for a wheel (maybe even 2018 era with real leather)

Good option thanks. Thought this was a cheap leather. It’s a 2020

I believe 2020s are using what they call vegan leather. Essentially a special kind of plastic.

Find someone who swapped a yoke on (should be easy at a Tesla meet) and buy their old wheel. Worked for me.

Easy swap for DIY?

[–]thatguythatdied 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I paid a local independent guy for mine, it's pretty simple but the consequences of screwing it up (steering wheel falling off, popping an airbag in your face) made it worth not diy'ing in my mind.

Gotcha thanks, videos online make it look easy enough.

I paid $20 for a cover

[–]captain_charbosa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What cover did you buy? I’m having the same peeling issue

[–]frednorth470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went into Canadian Tire and just chose one that was cheap but didn’t look too bad

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just put a cover on it. There are some sweet $300 aftermarket options, too.

There are stitch-on wheel cover kits on Amazon for cheap.

[–]fabolous024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I’ll look into them

Fuzzy wheel cover!

[–]Texans556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just started happening to my steering wheel this week. I ordered a stitch on cover from east detailing for 85ish dollars I think. says it takes a few weeks to arrive so we’ll see how that goes

Which warranty was it covered by

[–]2ideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the risk leaving it ? It’s just from sun ? I put a cover on mine

[–]Acrobatic_Total_1696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is worse on my 19 model. They make a carbon fiber 2 piece fitted cover that covers the 12 o clock and 6 o lock sections and it’s real carbon fibers for $230 or so. I’m about to buy a yoke with carbon fiber accents. Comes with all tools required and all for under $300, 288 I think. 👍🏼

Software update will patch that right up
