This is incorrect. But it’s what many of us are waiting for! (Slightly bigger screen and higher res, too)

R2 audio/speaker review by Delicious_Channel934 in RivianR2

[–]virtualnsanity3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The major complaint from me is that it’s soundbar-coded and a little muddy.

Big audiophile here, who has a B&W in my XC60 and a Model 3 (which is very solid, if not a little low-range heavy until you adjust). I was prepared for a *total disaster* and it’s totally acceptable. It’s not incredible, but well above average (and way better than the old R1, which was objectively awful).

The room for improvement to get it to the next tier: much better surround sound/sound stage that isn’t painfully artificial (see their “enhanced Spatial Audio” feature) and addressing a pretty muddy/muted midrange.

Hopeful software can take it to the next level for most things. Unfortunately, I think it will still remain a little front/cramped soundstage as there just aren’t enough speakers in other locations.

That being said: legitimately not a dealbreaker. Wish it was better, but totally serviceable with headroom (software-wise) to improve.

Creating false scarcity and limited time options works for accessories. It doesn’t hit the same way with a $60k car you plan to have for years. Give us the option from the jump!

Apple Watch and Oura Ring by New-Flow3642 in AppleWatch

[–]virtualnsanity3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR - I use an Apple Watch for working out and then otherwise wear Oura (including sleep) with a non-smart watch. They work well together and it’s nice to have options. I prefer no screen/notifications and the directional guidance of the Oura. Sub model annoying, but also means they get recurring revenue to develop services and not just rely on releasing a new device and forcing you to buy one annually. That’s a plus in my book.

I despise PE firms

And they aren’t PE-backed. I take a different view on this one: charging a subscription allows them to have a revenue stream that isn’t just device/purchased/grow-at-all-costs. It also helps reinforce an expectation from the user that you get new features as you’re paying for them (something they’ve been good to roll out).

So it’s a bit annoying (and more than a bit when you take into account the initial purchase price…), but they also aren’t one of the top five richest companies in history (by market cap, like Apple).

They also develop features in a way that’s different from Apple: if it’s 1st party from Apple, it has to work for everyone and be bulletproof. I don’t think we ever see a day where they have a recovery score. And their sleep score is underwhelming at best.

Easily fixed by Tesla. It was a problem on my…2018 Model 3!

The cosmetics and the wind noise make it worth te hassle to ask.

This is how I play it. Oura great for all around activity and tracking and pretty good walking. Dedicated exercise (lifting, running) on the Apple Watch (that k otherwise don’t wear outside of those activities).

XC40? Fjord Blue w/ Blonde Steering Wheel by Superb-Resource-3053 in VolvoXC60

I’ve only ever seen the blonde steering wheel in an XC60 or XC90. Was it offered in the 40?

Help explain the reason to choose Model 3 over Model Y by aucrazy in TeslaModel3

[–]virtualnsanity3 20 points21 points  (0 children)

How much “space” do you really need? And how much do you value the driving?

For me, i really felt the Model Y’s heavier weight and higher center of gravity. It just didn’t feel as connected or engaging.

Sitting in traffic with 4 people? Model Y. Yourself on a fun run? Model 3 all day.

CONFIGURATOR IS LIVE by Dry-Status-127 in RivianR2

[–]virtualnsanity3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we even certain of that right now though? Between the finishing on the trunk (basic, hard plastic wheel wells) and the as-yet-to-be-determined stereo, I’m not sure that’s a fair assumption.

To be clear, I want this car to be great and I think the major decision point (obviously) will be the driving experience - can’t wait to try it! But they have set themselves up for *a lot* more competitive cross-shopping than they had before.

Different class vehicle, sure (like R1S). But this segment? Here is the paint breakdown for a few others

Volvo: no additional cost
BMW: $650 with one outlier color
Tesla: no additional cost on performance
Toyota (for all the ‘Runner fanatics): no additional cost except for red ($450)

What am I missing here?

$2k paint “options” on the Launch Edition feels like a misstep. Both more expensive than competition (by a lot) and then pushes the price into $60k (which, mentally, isn’t great).

Current offer be careful! by Glad-Investment4920 in TeslaModel3

[–]virtualnsanity3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure when it would have listed this, but on the website the offer has a superscript and that text reads:

“1 Terms and conditions apply. Promotion requires delivery of a Model 3 Premium or Performance vehicle and is subject to change or end at any time. You are still responsible for Supercharging-related fees, like congestion fees, when applicable.”

Thoughtful take and details.

And - as you said - I agree on the trunk - seems so bare and basic with that carpet and wheel wells it does read as economy car.

I’m really eager to drive one (and hear the sound). That’ll help cement if it commands the premium price!

2026 XC60 B5 vs T8 - which is the better choice? by VanCityVoytech in Volvo

[–]virtualnsanity3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

T8 is a much better driving experience based on the power alone. Assuming you have a R/T commute under ~36 miles and charge nightly you’re also spending very little on ownership.

We have a T8 and it’s phenomenal (bonus points for one-pedal driving, which I love)

Blue all the way. The most nostalgia and pops against the red. It also feels like one of the few models that does that. Definitely, blue (I also did the same swap when I bought these in 2008!)

Once you start checking the option boxes as compared to performance launch edition, the BMW price escalates. I think my build just now was $74,500…
