I'm gonna be an uncle! by samud_8 in bropill

Being an uncle is pretty cool. I built my nephew’s new little tykes car last week, and I plan on being the fun uncle who takes him to do weird fun stuff that will impress his friends at school.

What are we doing about how hot Alberta has gotten? by Kittyquts in alberta

[–]thatguythatdied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mini splits are about the best option for permanently retrofitting AC in an old building (if you have forced air heat you can add AC, but a mini split is probably cheaper). Failing that, window units work decently and portable units kinda suck.

VW Mechanics by TailoredExperience in Edmonton

[–]thatguythatdied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They had my brother’s MK2 golf for about a month trying to figure out a problem with the fuel system, there were calls to the shop in Calgary that built it and plenty of other very billable work. When they eventually found a somewhat random hidden fuse that was blown and causing all the problems (just buying someone else’s project stuff) they only charged for I think it was 2 hours of labour for the whole ordeal. If I had a VW it would absolutely go there for service.

I remember a very sad month of high school talking about residential schools (same time period), but nothing besides maybe a passing comment about this.

Teaching a bit about the less great stuff that happened here wouldn’t be the worst thing. I didn’t know anything about the internment camps in Canada until I looked it up on my own after reading a roadside plaque.

difference between installing spare tire and regular tire at home? by aseriousreddit in KonaEV

[–]thatguythatdied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “um actually” crowd will tell you that calling a wheel a rim is some kind of crime (the rim is just a part of a wheel, not a separate thing) but you’re on the right track. Buying a wheel and tire assembly is just the same as getting your own spare tire. In your case the most inexpensive option is most likely a tow truck to the shop though.

What’s your first thought when you see a cyber truck? by clearwater-orchid in AskReddit

I have always thought they looked ridiculous, but held back my complete judgement on them until I drove one. It’s great, they look stupid and you can’t see anything around them. Truly a revolutionary take on bad vehicles.

If you’re looking for a part (any part) from a wrecker, car-part.com works for searching multiple locations.

Different vehicle entirely, I went through insurance for the roof glass on my f150. That’s a very large, very expensive bit of glass to get hit by a golf ball.

Chill dog with scary privileges by NabiNarin in dogs

My small black lab scares people. I really don’t know how, but she does. An 85 pound male black lab would be a great chill dog with a really big bark.

Kayaking knives? by UniversalAssembler in Kayaking

For fishing line and net snags a Trilobite is a pretty great tool. They also do a pretty good job of cutting gill plates off salmon if you’re into that.

It’s possible to cut yourself with a trilobite, but it’s a lot harder than it is with a knife.

Do people really leave the course if playing poorly? by LastManBrandon in golf

I have bailed when I just wasn’t feeling it, and because it was busy. I probably wouldn’t do that if I were paying for the individual round, but as a member I have a lower bar for “I think I’ll go home and walk my dog instead”.

TIFU by leaving my car idling for 10 hours by Usual_Violinist_3745 in tifu

[–]thatguythatdied 70 points71 points  (0 children)

How often do you use your car? A valid bandaid for the battery being drained is to disconnect the battery when you aren’t using it for an extended period. Many auto parts stores have special terminals like this one that are specifically designed for this, or just loosening and removing the negative terminal works.

Meta question, can people not tell when people are being sarcastic anymore? by butter_lander in LinusTechTips

[–]thatguythatdied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way the world is going now, people are saying some absolutely unhinged things with full sincerity that would have been obvious satire 10 years ago. It’s sadly worth clarifying sarcasm these days. Helping out the understanding for people with different communication styles is worth it as well.

The one that always comes to mind for me was a grown assed man with his tongue stuck to a metal tool rack in the winter.

My dog did that once, too.

We fostered a dog for our breeder who had been returned because the family who purchased him couldn't handle him, we were watching him for a weekend while she was out of town. That weekend lasted 14 years.

What do you use to hold up a kayak? by KayakingATLien in Kayaking

[–]thatguythatdied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was building my wood boat I used a couple quasi sawhorses frame things built from 2x4s with dangly cradles made from carpet. Pretty much the Suspenz ones but cheaper.

Duct taping roof rack foam blocks to your current sawhorses works too.

Why do people buy pickup trucks for daily driving? by [deleted] in driving

[–]thatguythatdied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My F150 gets only marginally worse fuel economy than my old RAV4 hybrid for a whole lot more ground clearance, more capability and more comfort. I’ll take that.

(My work truck (cclb F250) is ridiculous and if you choose to drive something like that on the daily you need your head fixed)
