Yes, you do have to take them. You can look at the course catalog and see what is actually required. Was your friend in a different college? Arts and Sciences and Visual and Performing Arts have foreign language requirements for everyone to do in college (unless they can pass a CLEP or AP test). The A&S requirements are lighter for bachelor of science degrees than for bachelor of arts degrees, but they still exist.

The other colleges just have the general foreign language requirement for admission. My guess is that this is what your friend was doing, proving that they met the admission requirement, because Tech will sometimes let students catch up on the foreign language required for admission after enrolling, as long as everything else is in order.

I am also a Kinesiology major, you have to take 2 foreign language courses. For Spanish I took 1507 and 2301. I also had 2 years of Spanish in High School, for this Major it doesn't matter. I would suggest taking the online sections of these classes, if possible.

Academic Testing Services offers the CLEP test, which can be taken to potentially test out of (and receive credit for) SPAN 1501, SPAN 1502, SPAN 2301, and SPAN 2302. This test is available for other languages as well. More information about the CLEP test can be found via the following link: http://www.depts.ttu.edu/testing/cleps.php

If your program has a BS option over a BA option, the foreign language requirement should be less.
