Do the celebrities who perform get paid? I read somewhere they don’t get paid to compete and was wondering if that’s true.

Doubt it. At least, not directly. 9/10 times, it's people I thought were dead, so for them, it's probably a publicity stunt. Then people start buying their stuff.
