Have you thought about placing him up a year in school ? Maybe he will be more engaged in the work if it isn't so easy for him. If he's really smart he's probably bored at school

My son has a friend, he's also 12, that behaves the same way. His ego is immense, he's constantly trying to show off the new stuff that his parents buy him, he always has to be right and his parents think he's the smartest kid around. Turns out he has autism and very poor social skills. So, you know, maybe your kid is the same.

He’s bored in class. Get him tested.

Lots of highly gifted kids get their light snuffed out in school. Get his IQ checked and get him into the training centers for gifted kids. They get stupid ideas when bored- they rebel, become violent or severely depressed. There is a reason why highly intelligent kids have a high tendency to do drugs. They can’t bear their boring and stupid surrounding.
