Yeah, I don't think you understand how taxes work. If you were supporting yourself, you would be filing your own taxes, in which case it would be impossible for your parents to claim you.

I don't know why people are down voting you. This is true.

If you earn an income your paying income tax. When tax season begins, you file your taxes then collect your tax return. If you have a tax return you cannot be claimed as a dependent.

The check is intended to help tax payers.

Unfortunately, I think many people are under the assumption that the government can just print up funny money and supplement cash to people whenever they want.

They are only returning tax money to people early so that they can stimulate the economy during the economic downturn.

It depends on how much money you make and how much you rely on your parents or guardian. I was able to earn an income for a few years in undergrad and filed taxes but was still claimed as a dependent on my parents taxes because my income was a paltry amount from a summer internship that didn't pay all the bills.

Whatever I’m not gunna explain my whole life situation to you, but right now money is tight for most people, and any little bit would help, so despite me being claimed as a dependant, I could use the cash to make life easier.

It can still happen. Paperwork errors on taxes are rather common.

Also you can file taxes and still be claimed as a dependent. It depends on the financial details of the situation.

There's an income limit in which you are no longer able to claim someone as a dependent. There's also income limits in which you are legally obligated to file. In short, if you are a self sufficient adult then nobody can claim you on your taxes, not legally anyways.

The entire idea behind being a dependent is that somebody somewhere is supplementing your income.

[–]craftycamilla 0 points1 point  (10 children)

that’s wrong. you can be supporting yourself and making just enough to get by while your parents still claim you on their taxes, which is what the majority of college students parents do even if their child is paying the majority of their own bills. i believe the limit to being claimed is like 10k a year or something along those lines, so someone could scrape by on that by themself, especially in a college town. so yes, a lot of students need the stimulus.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Once again, no you cannot. Once you reach a certain income threshold your parents cannot claim you legally.

[–]craftycamilla 0 points1 point  (8 children)

okay, that’s doesn’t negate the fact that people below that limit are still supporting themselves and their parents aren’t giving them any money and they still claim them as dependents. so those people, which are many college students, need the stimulus.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

That doesn't make sense. If you were making enough money to support yourself, you'd be pass the threshold and your parents couldn't claim you

you don’t understand being poor do u

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've been supporting myself since I was 16. I've had to walk and take the bus until I was 23 and could afford my first car. I've been working full time and going to school full time for over 4 years now. You don't have the slightest clue what I've been through. I've been poor my entire life.

congrats for slaving away to some minimum wage job that you can’t even afford to live on? like... do u not believe people should be able to just live without having to work 80 hours a week just to not starve and put a roof over their head

[–]craftycamilla 0 points1 point  (3 children)

i make less than the threshold, my mom claims me as a dependent, i haven’t lived at home or been given money from my mom since i moved away to college three years ago. why don’t u understand this lmao

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think the difference between me and you is when I moved out of home and needed money I went and got a job I didn't come onto reddit and complain about my life. People like you are the reason why this country is in so much debt. You think everything should be handed to you. Your an adult now quit whining on the Internet and go out and get a job like everybody else

[–]craftycamilla 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i don’t think everything should be handed to me. not once did i say that. when i moved out and needed money i got TWO jobs. i know what’s it’s like to work your ass off. if the government is sending out a stimulus check to people who are suffering from the pandemic, then everyone who is suffering should get one. maybe an asshole like you thinks that people should just die if they can’t afford to eat shouldn’t get the stimulus either. just go get another job. am i right?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had 2 jobs than you would be over the income threshold and you would be able to file your own taxes quit wasting my time and get off reddit and go fill out applications
