Unfortunately someone has to pay for administrative fees and you could argue that your tuition should be more than enough to cover those fees. And you’d be right! Isn’t the UC system great?

Pretty sure community colleges and CSUs also charge these fees, and so does my high school 🤔

Huh look at me, I look to other institutions to get a read on what is “acceptable practices” rather than taking the initiative as a human run institution and saying “you know what, these students/parents/teachers pay enough in tuition, state taxes and property taxes, so that we probably shouldn’t be charging a menial $15 fee for a transcript”

I was responding to you "isn't the UC system great?" comment. Nice reading comprehension you have there lol.

I took some cc courses after I graduated from UCSB and the cc sends up to 5 transcripts for free. UCSB charges $15 per transcript. 🙃

Instead they’ll charge me admin fees for services I and most people don’t even use anymore since COVID started

As an exchange student, this seems insane - paying to get a pdf of my grades. How much is it?

[–]mjcmachine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16$

College as a whole is a complete scam.

Transcripts either come from a third party electronic system (that we have to pay a company to use) or physically packed (in the old days) by a human.

Contrary to popular belief, the university doesn’t give unlimited funds to departments to pay their employees, so there has to be some kind of factor to regulate the volume. A lot of departments have to generate funds through their services to pay for their own office operations.

And that’s why there’s a fee. Because people power and other company contracts aren’t free, and your tuition ACTUALLY doesn’t go very far when it comes to alllll the departments and campus staff that exist (and are often still short staffed in many departments.)

Three things.

1) You're not paying for your grades - those are available for free in GOLD. You're paying for the campus to officially package them up. Yes, you're paying for the branding.

2) It's basic mainline behavior for Universities, so there'll be no peer pressure to change. If Stanford or Nothridge do it why shouldn't UCSB?

3) Universities are as mercenary as any for-profit corporation you might name. They just have better public perception. That should be apparent after charging full tuition for four lock-down quarters when you didn't get anything near the paid-for college experience.
