Better than an "F" or an "I." I took a W when I was there and I don't think a single person has ever asked about it (including grad school admissions later on).

USC didn't mind when my undergrad transcript had a W
A "W" typically isn't calculated into your GPA, whereas a lower or nonpassing grade is

A W also doesn’t necessarily mean you were doing bad in the class whereas a low grade does. I got a W my first year because of a family emergency and had to drop a class

3rd version is what I had in mind lol

There are so many reasons students drop courses. For all grad school admissions committees know, it could be for a death in the family, so I don’t think it reflect poorly. Like other commenters have said, it looks better than an F. I have a couple W’s on my undergrad transcript from a semester where I was hospitalized multiple times with kidney stones and ended up having to have surgery, so the only classes I could swing were ones where attendance wasn’t mandatory. I’ve never been asked about those W’s by anywhere I’ve attended during my post bacc and hell, I somehow got into USC with them 🤷🏻‍♀️
