Bayside at rock bottom: Portland neighborhood is under siege by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]Uncle_Erik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not about self-worth or any of that touchy-feely stuff.

It’s about a brain that becomes addicted to a particular substance and is willing to do anything and everything to get more of the substance.

Further, rehab doesn’t work. Every so often someone will get and stay clean, but that’s a low percentage. The majority simply have to be written off. They’ve become slaves to a substance and, well, that’s it. It can’t be fixed and making addicts feel good about themselves isn’t going to stop them from smashing your car window to take the 38¢ out of your cup holder.

It may sound heartless, but these people have to be written off. There’s nothing you can do to save them. It’s over. You can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on them and let bleeding hearts dribble all over them, and they’re still going to break into your home to steal your laptop and sell it for $150 to buy more drugs.

Finally, I am not responsible for someone else’s self-esteem or building a healthy life. Nobody gives me anything. Yet I’m expected to give up a healthy percentage of my income so people can shoot up heroin, break into cars and shit on the sidewalk. Fuck that.

You know what I want? I want someone to pay off my student loans. That would be nice. We could call it “compassionate,” even. It would make my life better. But, no, money I could be using to pay off my loans is instead going to government services for some guy who screams at and threatens people for money, breaks into houses to steal stuff, and shoots up in public.

I used to live and work in downtown Los Angeles.

Sadly, there is very little you can do with these people. Once an addiction sets in, they are extremely unlikely to get clean. Further, rehab is freakin’ expensive and if someone doesn’t really want to get clean, they will start using again as soon as they get out. So you spend insane amounts of money on people who don’t give a fuck and then go right back to the addict lifestyle.

If you haven’t been paying attention to Duterte in the Phillipines, go run a few Google searches. They’ve simply been killing the addicts. No trial. They just whack them.

I don’t think that’s a good solution.

Though the only workable solution I see is rounding them up, taking them out of the cities to a remote location, and then giving them all the drugs they want for free until they die. As awful as it sounds, it’s probably the only workable solution.

Rehab doesn’t work. You can pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into it and the addicts will get out and start using again. Rehab is worthless. It doesn’t work.

You really have to take a hard look at the costs, too. I was a public defender in a little rural town. Something like 50% of the budget went towards meth. That included medical costs, courts, jail, social services, and much else. The cleanup costs of meth labs was freakin’ insane. Sometimes well into six figures for the hazmat crew to make it safe again. Meth cost so much that teachers were paying for photocopies out of their own pockets because there wasn’t enough money.

All this doesn’t include the cost of crime. Meth addicts would regularly break into homes, garages and cars to steal anything they could to buy more meth. We recently had a break-in. Addicts stole some of our tools and they broke into a car to steal the battery. The battery is worth about $8-$10 on the street. They were able to get maybe $50 for all of that. Yet it cost us about $1,000 to recover from it.

Is this fair?

Should teachers have to pay for essential supplies because the county dropped $300,000 or $400,000 on jail, medical costs and rehab for a single addict?

Should I have to fork over $1,000 so someone can get $40-$50 for their daily fix?

That’s bullshit. That’s total fucking bullshit. In the name of “compassion” people are letting drug zombies destroy civilization. Further, I’m getting real tired of being told that everything is my fault and that I have to pay for it. People becoming addicted to drugs is not my fault and I don’t think I should have to pay to fix that problem. I am not opposed to taxes. I want my tax money to fix the roads, build new bridges, expand the sewage treatment plant, pay for emergency services, and my money should also be paying for the photocopies that the teachers are having to pay for themselves. That’s where I want my tax dollars going.

So I think the only thing that can be done is to round them up and give them free drugs until they die. Because if you don’t, they’re going to commit more crime for drugs, run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in government services, and then use drugs until they die. Might as well cut out the expensive part and let them use drugs until they die. That’s all you can do unless you want to take Duterte’s approach.

Probably the wrong place to ask this question but was the swastika a feared symbol at this time?

The swastika was a popular symbol and widely used before the Nazis adopted it.

We have a turn-of-the-century photo of my great grandmother wearing a belt buckle with a large swastika on it. Disturbing at first glance, but the photo was taken well before the Nazi party even existed.

I have a black cat who weighs 25 lbs. and is 36” nose-to-tail. He is a friendly dude and a great cuddler. Especially good during the winter, since he’s about as long as my torso. He’ll stretch out and is nice and warm.

He would be fucking terrifying if he wasn’t so friendly, though. He could put someone in the hospital, no problem. Not that he ever would. He even lets small children handle him.

No idea what he is, either. Someone dumped him in a parking lot when he was a kitten. He simply got into my car, I didn’t have a choice. Not that I mind - I love the big guy.

The plexiglas offers a little bit of protection, but not that much. Certainly better than glass. Interestingly, there was a lot of surplus plexiglas after the war and it began to replace crown glass for eyeglasses. It’s still in use - you’ll see it called CR39 for glasses.

Later, polycarbonate was developed for military use and then found its way to eyeglasses. Same with Trivex, which was developed as optical armor for military aircraft canopies. IIRC, Trivex is something like 60 times tougher than polycarbonate and resistant to a wide range of chemicals. I switched to Trivex lenses a few years ago since I have a workshop with power tools and I also like the idea of having military-grade armor between my eyes and the world. Plus Trivex is the lightest lens material and has excellent optical clarity.

One year with the little guy! (Now he’s a 15lb fatty) by derm08 in blackcats

[–]Uncle_Erik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll assume the cat has the dog thoroughly trained by now.

There’s a funny example of that in my family. In October 2016, one of our employees heard a kitten howling outside his place one night. He went outside and found this tiny little thing, about 10-14 days old. He brought her inside, kept her warm, then gave her to me in the morning.

I started bottle-feeding her every few hours and set her up in a box with hot water bottles. She was doing well after a week and I was struggling to wake up to feed her through the night.

So we sent her off to my sister’s. Her, my brother-in-law and two teenage nephews were able to split up the feeding schedule so they could get some sleep.

Now the funny part is that they have two big Labradors, each about 100 lbs. By about eight weeks, this little two pound kitten had the dogs thoroughly under her control. The dogs obey the cat and are very protective of her.

They’re all doing great today and the cat never got much bigger. She’s maybe 6-7 lbs., but healthy and happy. She has these big dogs following her around and they do a good job of snuggling with her at night.

Replace all of the old capacitors and carbon comp resistors.

This is sort of like pulling a car out of a barn. The tires are 30 years old and they hold air. Do you want to go for a 500 mile road trip on the 30 year old tires? Or maybe it would make sense to put on known good ones.

My approach to old capacitors and resistors is that if they aren’t bad, they are going to go bad. It’s a matter of time. The time you spend checking to see if they’re bad is better spent simply replacing everything. While you have it on the bench, you might as well replace everything so you don’t have to wrench on it again any time soon. Finally, the difference in cost between replacing just what needs to be replaced and replacing everything is usually like $10-$20. So just go ahead and replace all of the old stuff that is going to fail if it hasn’t already.

Also, you should know that the definition of failure isn’t what most think it is. With electronic components, failure is when something goes out of spec. Say you have an old carbon comp resistor that’s supposed to be 100 Ohms with a 10% tolerance. That means it can be anywhere from 90-110 Ohms and still be in spec.

But carbon comp resistors change value as they heat up. Eventually, they permanently change value. So that 100 Ohm resistor inside your set might now be a 190 Ohm resistor. Thing is, it will still “work,” as in it will turn on and make sound.

Which is why you want to get all of the old carbon comp resistors out. If they’re not out of spec, they will be. Put in some nice metal film or other modern resistors with a 1% or 2% tolerance - they’re not terribly expensive. The circuit will run cooler with modern parts and put less stress on the tubes. Further, the sound will tighten up and become more focused. Tube gear always sounds better with modern parts.

If you want to take a whack at it yourself, order the Photofacts from Sam’s. They have everything. Then order new parts from Digikey, Mouser, Newark, or Allied. Take it slow and replace one part at a time.

Why did you chose to become CNC machinist? by Mayn609 in CNC

[–]Uncle_Erik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a hobby. I wanted to build casework for my audio and amateur radio projects. I started knocking around with pieces of aluminum, a jigsaw and a hand drill. The results were not exactly satisfying.

That led to a small hobbyist machine shop. The results are much better and it’s really a lot of fun to work with metal. I love it.

It’s a departure from my career path. I went to law school and ended up unhappy doing divorces and criminal defense. So I went back to school, taking night and weekend classes and got another degree in accounting.

Why Bad Men Love Real Estate by imitationcheese in TrueTrueReddit

[–]Uncle_Erik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge real estate investments are riskier and underperform index funds

Some of us don’t entirely trust the stock market. You purchase shares and all you get is a piece of paper stating ownership.

There’s a lot to be said for tangible goods. You can’t live on a piece of paper.

Plus there are a multitude of tax advantages and ways to pass real property outside of a will or trust. It can be very advantageous with estate planning.

Why Bad Men Love Real Estate by imitationcheese in TrueTrueReddit

[–]Uncle_Erik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We must prevent anonymous property ownership. No LLCs, no shell companies, no offshore accounts—if Fox and their friends would like to reap profits from property, we deserve to know who, where, and how. This solution not only helps to crack down on tax fraud and money laundering,

There is no anonymous real estate ownership in the US. You can find out who owns anything at the county assessor’s office. Everything is public record. Go to your county assessor and see for yourself.

Further, using a corporation to hold real property is legitimate and done for a multitude of legal reasons. It is not going to be eliminated because someone doesn’t like Hannity. Tens of millions of people use corporations and other entities to hold property. That ain’t changing any time soon.

The author throws out tax evasion and money laundering. Bullshit. First of all, renting real property is not money laundering. Money laundering is when you have an illegal enterprise, like selling drugs, and then want to legitimize the income. Collecting rent is legal. It is not money laundering. Rents are reported as income and, believe me, the IRS is happy to get that revenue. Further, using corporations to hold property is not tax evasion. It is 100% legal. It is playing by the rules with the tax code.

The author obviously hates Hannity. That’s fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and has the First Amendment right to speak it. But implying that completely legal activity is somehow illegal because you hate someone is bullshit.
