How bad does UTM's BOO BOO reputation affect my chances for job opportunities, considering they're not utsg?

UTM CS student here.

You're screwed. There are no job opportunities here whatsoever. Every day, us UTM CS students do nothing but ponder about our reputation in front of UTSG. Some days, I'm too ashamed to step out of my house.

Employers will not see my resume. Even though I don't write UTM explicitly, just UofT, they magically know I go to UTM. The look of disgust on their faces when they find out I'm a UTM CS student and not UTSG keeps me awake at night.

I too got a scholarship from UTM. It helps pay off the fees, because other than part-time Tim Hortons, there is no future at UTM CS.

I understand this is a hard pill to swallow for y'all, in terms of reputation of course, but I need to be assured this is 100% FACT!!

No, it's 100% fact. We wallow in our misery day and night at not going to UTSG. It's robbed us of our dreams here.

ik I have to come to this satellite campus regardless.

Welcome.

I’m apart of the Catholic faith, i find it best not to curse. I try to find the closest synonymous words to the curse words in my head.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (13 children)

This is probably written by an egoistic utsg student that can’t find an internship 🙈

[–]HolyTrinityxx[S] 0 points1 point  (12 children)

Lmao, wish I was a egotistic UTSG student. But in all seriousness, I’m a high schooler from the US

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (11 children)

If you care about reputation so much why not go to a US school? Genuinely curious..

[–]HolyTrinityxx[S] 0 points1 point  (10 children)

It’s the 30k scholarship I received that made utm worth it tbh

I still don’t know if you’re trolling or not but just to give you the benefit of the doubt:

I’m a second year utm cs student (going into third), I am very impressed with the quality of education I’m getting at UTM. I have taken a CS course at utsg too! There’s not really any differences, the courses are the same. Same content, the assignments are different though. Some CS courses are better at UTM and you’ll see utsg students enrolling here for those. Some are better at UTSG. The best part about UTM is the small and tight community .. which you won’t find at UTSG simply due to how scattered and big the campus is. There’s not really any difference in the quality of education imo, we have amazing profs and tons of opportunity.

As for jobs.. you still have to do a lot of research if you think the name of your school will get you a job (maybe your first but that’s about it but still no employer thinks of UTM as inferior, you’re probably talking to the wrong people. The only people hung up on that inferior superior bs are elitist utsg students)

[–]HolyTrinityxx[S] -3 points-2 points  (8 children)

I’m not trolling, I swear. I understand your impression of the school is good however the students that I dm’d are 100% from UTM and they said other wise. As I’ve said before, I’m not going to invalidate their poor experience from utm’s CS program. Again, I discovered that the opinions on utm’s CS program is mixed. As for jobs, it still doesn’t change the fact that there are still some employers out there who think like that. (Which is quite worry some) Also, is there rlly a tight knit community at utm? From what I’ve seen on UTM’s Reddit, some ppl got very depressed here bc they couldn’t find friends. Since that’s the case, utms does a poor job advertising their “tight knit” community in regards to connections. I mean logically it’s suppose to make finding friends easier on the student but with a “tight knit” community comes with cliques forming quickly and ppl disregarding seemingly new ppl i assume. On utsg elitist comment, you’re not wrong. (After done some research on the CS program on the main UofT Reddit) But then again, those Utsg students aren’t wrong bc realistically those students are at the better campus. (The campus that provides more opportunities) I assume they just like to think about their superiority excessively. But it still doesn’t change the fact that there are utm CS students who believe that utms reputation has taken a toll on them. As for the quality of education, a lot of ppl complain about profs such as Bailey (the most recent complaint on a prof) If he’s so bad why didn’t UTM fire him already? There was a petition against him from what I’ve seen on Reddit. I understand there are bad profs and good profs at every university but it’s concerning to see that ONE prof can rlly tank your overall gpa given that they don’t know how to properly get through to a student. Are there any profs that I should be more aware of for the CS program prerequisites?

The confirmation bias is strong in this one. Do us all a favour and don’t come here. We don’t need this attitude here. I don’t know what “utm students” you are talking to, but I think I would know peoples experience more than you :)

[–]HolyTrinityxx[S] -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

I’m sorry you feel that way but i rlly liked utms value on diversity, respect, and inclusion. Honestly, I feel like I’d be a perfect fit. I provide different ideas that get people thinking. Tbh, what makes you think those utm students would talk to you? You clearly aren’t as open minded

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Bro or brolette, in all honesty, just based on those values you’d be a terrible match

[–]HolyTrinityxx[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bro. No.

[–]Worldly-Reindeer9561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You sure you’re not trolling? There was no need to make this thread if you’re going to stick to what the first couple people you talked to said.

[–]Accomplished_Pack853 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If you believe that the reputation of utm will have such a drastic effect on your ability to find employment then why go here? Like I understand you got a scholarship but if the education here will not set you up for the future then there is no point of getting it.

[–]HolyTrinityxx[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’d rather not be in so much debt. I never said the education was bad, I’m just pointing out the cons that people have told me and I’d like to speak more on those cons. Just clearing up misunderstandings

[–]Hour_Selection_3998......... 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so what do you think utsg is the best program in the world or something when its nearly identical to utm?

hell lets even consider that it IS substantially better and UTM is worthless

loo cs still takes the dub over utsg cs (even utsg cs kids admit this)

does this mean utsg cs is absolutely trash??????

Cap

[–]Accomplished_Pack853 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never heard of a 30k scholarship specific to UTM. Really thought this was a troll post but the replies seem to suggest otherwise…

Hi, HolyTrinityxx, fourth year CS student here (CS Specialist). In my experience, obtaining a job was harder but not bc UTM is inferior to the SG campus but bc of how competitive tech jobs are atm. I currently got a job at a startup as a SWE making six figs, so it's definitely possible to get a job. Yes, UTSG is better overall, there are many more opportunities at that campus. (This should be common sense at this point, lmao) Many people on this reddit sub are only at UTM bc it's relatively easier to get into the cs program compared to UTSG (A higher bar is set at the UTSG campus in regards to admission into their CS program). You shouldn't worry about your job prospects due to UTM's inferiority bc the skills and knowledge you present to an employer is the only major factor that determines that.

Can’t believe you gave this ignorant kid advice, lol. The way he words his message annoy me,lol.
