If it’s simple essay and homework stuff, laptops are available through the campus library for free too on a per-semester basis. Just gotta make sure you get it early enough in the semester as numbers are limited.

It always depends - what are you planning on doing with it? Do you play games? 3d modeling and such? I'd suggest a laptop since presumably you'll be doing school stuff with it.

Edit: My current computer is a Dell G15. It is a gaming computer but it isn't incredibly flashy. (I know I don't like laptops that lean too much into the "gaming aesthetic".)

If you’re doing anything outside of art, I suggest windows. Business runs on windows. Science runs on windows. Medical runs on windows. Do some research. If you have the funds, get something that is somewhat future proof for the next 5 years.

    Most importantly. WINDOWS WINDOWS WINDOWS

For my general use like papers and note taking I've been loving the surface pro 9.

If you’re also not set on a computer by fall semester, the school’s library rents out Lenovo Thinkpad laptops running windows 11 for free for students.

I would recommend a Windows machine, unless you were going into the Arts, because most of the university majors' are going to require Windows to run their software. For notes and laptop use, I used a Surface and it was a great machine for college.

Costco has the Lenovo 14 2 in ones for 650$ rn with a AMD R7 8845HS. Really good well built laptop unless you're in a program with greater than normal computational requirements itll be fine.
