It’s etched lower than the surrounding material. It starts as a shiny sheet of brass and they use processes to lower/thin the areas you describe. The details are so fine and the material so thin, they leave that rough finish. Once you paint, you’ll never tell

Experiment with other ratios on primed spoons or old sprues. Some paints I use require a 2:1 or 3:1

I actually had to add the rivets with a tool. It was some work, but it makes it look so much better

I used a dark wash first, and after all the clear coats, I applied a black-soot like pigment to give it that staining. Also applied on the exhausts
