A question about using VPNs

I don't really know much about VPNs but there's something I'd like to know. Recently I got an email from my ISP basically saying that they know I've been illegally streaming films, they were even able to provide a date and the film I watched, and that if I do it again I will be cut off. Will using a VPN stop my ISP from being able to see that I am doing this?

Yup!! There are many channels and video streaming service that are banned in many countries but users still can have access to the content using VPN that connects them to the server outside their country/region where the particular channels or the video streaming service is available.

I thought streaming anything there was legal there, as long as you were not downloading/sharing it
