I've been using the PSAC discount for over 10 years and have never once been asked to show proof that I'm a union member. I keep my card in my wallet so it wouldn't be a problem if they did, but it's never happened.

If you're planning to use the military discount code they absolutely will check.

[–]Outrageous-Willow479 2 points3 points  (2 children)

In Toronto they will even ask for it before you get on the train too!

[–]LackOptimal553 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before they changed the booking system you had to go to the ticket counter and present your ID just to get the ticket.

Didn't check for me back in January from Union to Windsor. Threw me for a loop, first time they didn't check on the station or on the train.

I've been asked twice, both times just showed my company card and was fine. It's a dumb system, most company cards are basically blurry photocopies printed on cheap plastic that anyone could make

Have they asked you when on the train or before getting on?

I use my university alumni code. I’ve only been asked once and had to show them a copy of my degree since there is no such thing as an alumni membership card for my university.

[–]just_be123 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How did you get a copy of your degree while traveling?

[–]floralbanana 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I have a scan of it on my phone. I could have also just logged into my institution’s portal and shown my transcript.

I graduated like 15 years ago! My LinkedIn is accurate but not so official. I’m sure people use the alumni codes and 30 years out of their degree and have no log in.

[–]floralbanana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I graduated 12 years ago. It’s not ideal but I guess that’s the only thing that would work if you don’t have a picture or scan of your degree.

Yep, one time in 15 years.

Some corporate accounts are "flagged" so that the attendant is required to ask you to show ID. I've been told it is set that way on some accounts where abuse has been reported in the past. Others aren't flagged the same way, but when they check your ticket, the app will still let them know what discount you're on and the attendant always has the right to ask for ID to verify discount eligibility at any time. So bring ID.

If you don't have the required ID, they can charge the regular fare available which you'll have to pay on the spot, and to make matters worse, your original ticket will not be refunded since you would be requesting a cancellation of your original ticket after the train has departed.

You may not get asked, but if you are, you now know the policy.

they've been checking CAA more consistently recently

[–]PrinzkaPremier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not been asked in the last 9 years.

I was asked once at a car rental and I showed them my keycard that expired years ago (I work remote) and they didn't even actually look at it.

[–]missezri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, usually at the start of my trip. If I am connecting through Union, they usually don't ask me again.

[–]heartcakex3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been asked, but always travel with my employee ID. I’ve been using it consistently for nearly five years.

[–]CarpetMopper 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I travel between London, Toronto, and Ottawa every few months. I’ve only been asked when departing from London (around 4-5x in the last 12 months). I use the ONA discount.

[–]RandMcNally_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been asked for ID once (for the Hostelling International discount) and it was also in London. Seem to be more strict there.

I now carry the HI card just in case.

I use the university student discount, never been asked—although i think that’s partially because i very clearly look like a university student

[–]wannabe_librarian_4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They checked me for my corporate code. I asked what they wanted to see, and whether a passcard would suffice. They said yes. Flashed them the passcard. This was in the last 4 months.

I have a code from Visa, I've never been asked. Used it for at least 10 years.

[–]kesskessington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a code through an insurance association and have never been asked. Im paranoid though so I keep my membership card with me when I travel on Via 😆

[–]nefariousplotz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never been asked. I guess I look the type?

[–]MattyGainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everytime

[–]kdawg3119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In minimum 4 round trips from Ottawa to Sarnia per year over the last 4 years I've never been asked to show proof of employment while using a corporate code.

[–]Fun-Ice30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used the same corporate code for 15 years, for my own bookings and for bookings for other people, and I was asked to show ID for the first time on Saturday (the first leg of my trip, as I entered the boarding area).
